I keep running into the same annoyance: there's a 45-minute tutorial on YouTube with exactly one useful answer buried inside it, and the only way to get it is to scrub through the whole thing at 2x speed. Auto-generated captions exist, but YouTube buries them behind menus and makes them nearly impossible to copy cleanly. I wanted a paste-link-get-text tool that just works.
So I built TubeZap — a free YouTube transcript generator. Paste any YouTube link and you get the full transcript in seconds, with or without timestamps. No signup, no extension, no API key. Free forever.
How it works is deliberately boring: you paste a YouTube URL, TubeZap fetches the video's caption data, and hands you back clean text. It supports youtube.com, youtu.be, Shorts, and mobile links — basically any public video with captions, which is the vast majority of YouTube in every language.
The features I actually use myself:
- Timestamps on every line — clickable, so you can jump straight to that moment in the video.
- Download as TXT or PDF — clean files with the video details included.
- Search inside the transcript — find any word or phrase, see the match count, jump to highlighted results.
- Multiple copy formats — with timestamps, as plain text, or as flowing paragraphs. Choose what you need.
- Video info up top — title, channel, duration, and thumbnail, so you always know what you're reading.
I built this because my own workflow needed it. I'm constantly turning videos into notes, quotes for posts, and references for projects. Copy-pasting from YouTube's caption panel was a weekly tax on my time, and the paid "YouTube to text" tools charge for something that shouldn't cost anything. The caption data is already there — extracting it shouldn't need an account or a credit card.
Who it's for: students and researchers pulling quotes from lectures, content creators repurposing videos into blog posts and newsletters, non-native speakers reading along to build vocabulary, and anyone who prefers reading over watching. Accessibility matters too — a text version of a video helps people who'd rather read than listen.
It's live now: tubezap.lovable.app — paste a link, get the text.
If you use it, I'd genuinely love to hear what you make with it. What's the first video you're going to zap?

For the quote/research workflow, I'd add a caption-track fixture: one video with both creator captions and auto-generated captions, plus a second language. Show which track and language produced the text, and carry that provenance into TXT/PDF exports. Then switch tracks after a search and check that highlights, match counts and timestamp links all refer to the newly selected text, not the previous track. I'd keep "no captions available" separate from "caption retrieval failed" too, so an empty response doesn't look like a complete transcript. Does TubeZap choose a track automatically or let the reader select it? Article-based suggestions, not results from running it.
abdull, this is exactly the kind of frictionless, user-respecting tooling the web needs more of! ⚡
your "deliberately boring" approach—no signup, no api key, no extensions—is a masterclass in constraint-driven design. it perfectly mirrors the philosophy behind koda: remove every possible point of friction and respect the user's time, data, and privacy.
the accessibility angle is also huge. for users on budget phones or spotty 3g connections (like me!), streaming a 45-minute video is a massive data and battery drain. being able to instantly grab the text transcript is an absolute game-changer for learning and research without the bandwidth tax.
one quick technical question: since you're keeping it so lightweight and private, are you parsing the caption data entirely client-side to maintain that "no api key" promise, or are you using a lightweight serverless function (like cloudflare workers) to handle the youtube extraction?
fantastic work building something that solves a real, daily workflow pain point. checking out tubezap now! 🐯📝
