I'm 13. I built a 10,000-line security suite for Windows. Meet ATLOCK v5.

Description: "ATLOCK v5 by Akhouri Systems: Argon2id + AES-256-GCM encryption, a decoy vault, FIDO2, ransomware canaries, Shamir recovery, and a self-verifying release. Here's how it works."

ATLOCK v5 is out. πŸ”

Some people say "Akhouri Systems has never built a serious app."

From today, I have a one-word reply:

ATLOCK_v5

Hey dev.to πŸ‘‹ I'm Anmol, founder of Akhouri Systems. I'm 13.

I'm not telling you my age for sympathy points. I'm telling you because I want you to judge the app, not the birth certificate. So here it is:

πŸ‘‰ Download ATLOCK v5

What is ATLOCK?

ATLOCK is a Windows-first total security suite, shipped as a .exe and written in pure Python.

Module What it does
πŸ—„οΈ File Guard Encrypt files and whole folders with a password (plus optional keyfile / hardware key)
πŸ”‘ Password Vault Offline vault with a decoy "panic" mode, breach checks, and importers
⚑ Quick Lock One-click locking from the Explorer right-click menu
πŸ›‘οΈ Defender Dashboard Security overview, VirusTotal integration, startup watchdog
🐀 Ransomware Canary Tripwire files that detect suspicious tampering
🧰 CLI toolbox 50+ command-line flags for power users

The app runs exactly as you'd expect with no arguments, and the CLI is there if you want to go deep.

πŸ”¬ The nerdy part (my favorite)

1. Container format v3.1: built like a real crypto format

Every locked file, folder, and Quick Lock item uses my own container format:

  • Chunked AES-256-GCM: each chunk is authenticated independently, so one corrupted chunk doesn't mean a lost file
  • Key commitment: a wrong password is detected before any plaintext is produced
  • Per-seal chunk subkeys derived with HKDF
  • Header-bound AAD: tamper with the header and decryption fails
  • Padme padding (optional): hides the true file size, with at most ~12% overhead
  • Backward compatible: v1/v2 containers and old 5.0 files still open and migrate automatically

2. Argon2id everywhere (and a safety ceiling)

Passwords are stretched with Argon2id, at a 64 MB / t=3 floor for files and 128 MB / t=4 for the vault and recovery keys.

The part I'm proud of: untrusted headers can't abuse the KDF. If someone hands you a doctored file claiming "use 40 GB of RAM," ATLOCK refuses. There's a hard ceiling (512 MB, t=6, p=8), so a malicious file can't freeze your PC.

3. The panic password (decoy vault) 🎭

The vault has two passwords:

  • your real master password
  • a panic password that opens a believable, entirely fake vault

Here's the clever bit: both slots are derived concurrently with the same KDF cost, so an observer can't tell which password you typed by timing it. And the decoy slot always exists, filled with random bytes if you never set one, so the file itself never reveals whether you use panic mode.

4. Real second factors

  • TOTP (RFC 6238), implemented in pure Python 🐍
  • FIDO2 / WebAuthn hardware keys (YubiKey etc.)
  • Windows Hello (face / fingerprint / PIN)
  • Fail-closed policy: if your policy requires a second factor and it isn't set up, access is denied, not skipped

5. Anti-rollback sealed state

Settings, vault data, lockout counters, watchdog and canary databases all live in sealed state: AES-256-GCM encrypted, HMAC-authenticated, protected by a Windows DPAPI-wrapped key, and rollback-anchored. If an attacker restores an old copy to reset your wrong-password counter, ATLOCK notices and hard-locks.

6. Breach checks without leaking your password

The vault audits for weak, reused, old, and breached passwords. The breach check uses HIBP k-anonymity: only a 5-character hash prefix ever leaves your machine, never the password.

7. Clipboard that doesn't snitch

Copied passwords are flagged so Windows excludes them from clipboard history and cloud clipboard sync, then cleared automatically.

8. Hardened against nasty files

  • Folder locking uses a hardened ZIP pipeline that defends against zip-slip, path traversal, symlink tricks, and zip bombs
  • DLL-planting defence runs before any other import loads a DLL
  • All data is ACL-restricted to your Windows user
  • SecureBuffer + VirtualLock + zeroing for secrets in memory, best-effort (see the honesty section)

9. Recovery done right

  • Shamir secret sharing: split a recovery key into shares and rebuild it from enough of them (--shamir-split / --shamir-join)
  • One-time recovery codes
  • Forgot the master password? --reset queues a reset that completes after 24 hours, and any successful unlock cancels it, so an attacker can't instantly take over

10. In v5: stuff I'm really proud of

--getting-started # plain-language quick start + glossary
--device-health # BitLocker / hibernation / cloud-folder check
--keyfile-create PATH # strong keyfile for File Guard
--wipe-free-space # overwrite free disk space
--fuzz 300 # stress-test the container parser with 300 random corruptions
--pk-keygen / --pk-encrypt / --pk-decrypt / --sign / --check-sig # public-key crypto
--verify-self # signed-release self check
--import-passwords FILE # Bitwarden / Chrome / Firefox / KeePass / 1Password
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Yes, ATLOCK ships with its own fuzzer and a self-test (--selftest). I wanted it to attack itself before anyone else does.

Extra lock: in File Guard you can require both your password and a keyfile or hardware key, so a stolen password alone isn't enough.

🧠 Honest limits (the part most projects skip)

Real security engineers respect honesty more than hype, so here's what ATLOCK cannot do. This is also written into the source code:

  • A same-user attacker who can run code as you can modify the program or its files, or read process memory. Integrity checks and anti-debug raise the cost, but they don't make it impossible.
  • Python strings are immutable, so passwords can't be guaranteed erased from RAM.
  • Secure shredding on SSDs isn't guaranteed. BitLocker is the real fix, and --device-health checks for it.
  • No kernel driver and no code signing. ATLOCK is an application-layer tool, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning the first time you run it. Check the SHA-256 below before you run it.
  • FIDO2 here proves the registered key was present and touched. It doesn't validate the vendor.
  • The real defence against offline guessing is Argon2id + a genuinely strong password.

I'd rather you trust ATLOCK for what it is than be fooled by what it isn't.

πŸš€ Get started

  1. Download and extract ATLOCK_v5.zip
  2. Run ATLOCK_v5.exe. New here? Try ATLOCK_v5.exe --getting-started first.(when you run ATLOCK_v5 first time it will automatically show the guide)

Why I built this

I didn't want to build another to-do app to prove I could code. I wanted to build something where every design decision has a reason, a tool I'd trust with my own files, and one I could defend line by line.

Hype lasts a week, but work that holds up lasts years. That's why ATLOCK has versioned formats, automatic migrations, a self-test, a fuzzer, and a page of honest limitations.

Akhouri Systems is just getting started. ATLOCK v5 is proof of what we can build, and it's the floor of what's coming, not the ceiling.

πŸ’¬ Your turn, dev.to

  • Break it. Run ATLOCK_v5.exe --fuzz, read the container format, try to find a flaw.
  • Open an issue or PR. I read every one.
  • Tell me what v6 should have. No promises on timing, though. I'm pretty exhausted after this one πŸ˜…

I'm 13, I'm just getting started, and this is v5. πŸ˜‰

This makes me remember my File Encrypter! Honestly, I still couldn't understand what exactly it is really. But from the first impressions, I'd say it sounds really good, maybe a 9 or something? Let me actually try it in my PC. Now I am in bus, unfortunately :( But I will try it when i reach home! I starred the repo too!

bro but still you don't understand about what it is lol.
no problem when you will try it you will understand it.
it is " Total Security Suite"

like you said your file encrypter, it is also a security tool but the difference is that yours one or any security tool in market may be one file encrypter, 1 password manager or else.
but it combines all in one suite.
also it has excellent cryptography, 80% file locking apps just hide the files, 10% locks them actually but weak cryptography while ATLOCK falls in best 10% with excellect cryptography.
when you will try it you will for sure understand it and may make ATLOCK your default security tool installed in your PC. like I've πŸ‘‡

Hey Anmol! πŸ˜„πŸ”₯

You really don’t make it easy to keep up with you, do you? πŸ˜‚

I took some time to examine the ATLOCK v5 package, including its executable structure, documentation, and security architecture.

My rating: 8/10 for the engineering approach. πŸ‘

What impressed me most wasn’t the 10,000 lines of code or the number of features. It was your attention to threat modeling, versioned encryption formats, KDF resource limits, recovery mechanisms, and especially your willingness to document security limitations.

A few things I’d encourage you to investigate further:

  • Temporary plaintext files: What happens if the application crashes while a decrypted file is open?
  • Anti-rollback: Can an attacker bypass the protection by restoring the encrypted state and its rollback anchors together?
  • Chunked AES-GCM: Are chunk ordering, truncation, and cross-file substitution cryptographically prevented?
  • FIDO2: Is the hardware key cryptographically involved in unlocking, or does it only serve as an authentication gate?
  • Release integrity: Your executable isn’t Authenticode-signed. How can users independently establish trust in the distributed binary?

These are questions worth testing, not confirmed vulnerabilities.

I also appreciate that you included fuzzing and self-tests. That’s a great direction, but independent verification is what will really take ATLOCK to the next level.

My suggestion for v6? Don’t rush to add more features. Focus on proving that the security mechanisms you’ve already built actually hold up under adversarial testing.

And one more thing: I wouldn’t deduct points simply because you used Python. Security depends much more on implementation, architecture, and threat modeling than the programming language itself.

I haven’t completed a source-level audit or dynamic security assessment, so my 8/10 reflects the design and engineering effort, not a certification of its security.

Keep going, my friend. You’re building something ambitious, and I’m genuinely curious to see how far you take it. πŸš€

And please, get some rest before v6. You’re making the rest of us look lazy! πŸ˜‚πŸ‘

Brooo, you said you will break it... bro try to break
also thanks for your kind words. (bro what I done? to make you guys look lazy lol you guys have job, I've no job I'm kindaa unemployed lol for now just for name I'm Founder & CEO but with 0 revenue or PAT.
btw, Temporary plaintext: opened files live in a protected working folder, and a leftover-recovery routine tries to wipe anyything a crash left behind at the next start. But a crash can still leave a plaintext copy until then, and I can't guarantee deletion on SSDs. I need to test the crash cases properly I thought I'm done lol. let me test it...

  1. Anti-rollback: this is myyy weakesttttt spot. A same-user attacker who can restore the encrypted state together with its anchors Could probably reset a counter. The design makes that harder, but I've never claimed it's impossible.

  2. Chunked AES-GCM: each chunk's authenticated data includes the header hash, chunk index and a final-chunk flag,, and each file has its own subkey and key comittment, so reordering, dropping, Duplicating or truncating chunks and swapping chunks between files should all fail. "Should" is the key word, so this is exactly what I want people to try to break.

  3. FIDO2: it depends on the feature. In File Guard's extra lock the key's hmac-secret becomes part of the encryption key, so it's Crypto graphically involved. For login 2FA it's only a gate, and that's written in the code.

nd for code signing and audit I need money πŸ’΅ which I don't because I dont have funding, support, so yeah I can't do so for now....
v6 will be more great as you can see the jump from v4 to v5 was massive I will try more bigger jump next time from v5 to v6 with your feedbacks implemented too.
I'm not like a fruit brand who always change or introduce new color and market it as a latest beat mobile( no apple was harmed lol) and not like samsung too literally no clear difference between S25 ultra and S26 ultra lol.
I literally re structured v4 to v5 completely.

And thanks for the 8/10, I know that's for the design and not a security certification. bro but break it and give final rating too.
I worked harder just because of you broooo....

Brooo, you actually came back with technical answers to every single point. Now THAT is what I like to see! πŸ˜‚πŸ”₯

Your explanation of the chunk authentication and FIDO2 hmac-secret integration is particularly interesting. Those are meaningful design decisions, not just features added to a checklist.

And I respect your honesty about anti-rollback. Knowing where your security boundaries end is just as important as knowing where they begin.

About the money: don’t worry about commercial code signing or paid audits right now. You can still make serious progress with reproducible tests, published test vectors, fuzzing, and community code reviews.

As for breaking ATLOCK, challenge accepted. 😎 But I won’t call something a vulnerability until I can reproduce it, and I won’t give you a final security rating without evidence.

One condition, though: no v6 feature explosion until we’ve properly tested v5! πŸ˜‚

And bro, you don’t need revenue or a CEO title to prove you’re a developer. Your work speaks for itself.

Now get some sleep. Your brain deserves a maintenance window. πŸ€£πŸ‘
