In May I started learning iOS programming with a goal in mind of making a calendar app for my mom, who has temporal lobe epilepsy. This week I delivered her an iPad with the app on it!
Over the past few days, I've collected a long list of issues to fix (and fixed about half of them) based on her and her care-givers' interactions with the app. At the same time I've seen the app start to help a bit; I've been able to say on the phone, "look at your calendar" and verify that it answers her questions. I'll keep making improvements, fingers crossed that it will eventually help relieve her constant anxiety about the future!
Keep doing what you're doing. This is amazing!!!
Woooaaaa!!!
That is such an awesome win, Monty. I remember you talking about that goal in one of your early posts. I'm so happy to hear that and I hope you feel a good sense of accomplishment now that she has the app in hand. 🙂
I'm sure you'll continue on learning more and find new ways to improve the app based on her experience with it.
It warms my heart to hear about you doing this for your mom. Wishing you two the best! 💚
Let's go!
Very excited also for the new year!
Got my blog post accepted into AWS in Plain English Medium publication aws.plainenglish.io/recertify-your...
Woot woot! Congrats, Carla. That's awesome stuff. 🙌
Thank you!
This week, I started a YT channel which I have been thinking since September 2022.
I will try to share what I know here.

Nice!! Sounds like you've put a lotta thought into it, Shameel.
Not really putting a lot of thought.
I tried to record a lot of times but I always thought it wasn't perfect. Months passed by and I couldn't get through it.
But somehow, I now started with my old headset and my current work system just to get it up and running.
Hope, I can be consistent enough; upgrade and improve along the way :)
Learning rescript
DrSensor / rescript.nix
nix devshell for using rescript compiler without JS runtime
ReScript with nix
Status: Works on simple example
Important
no JS runtime is involved or harmed in any way in this experiment
Usage
Dev
Clone the repo first (don't do human cloning because the code written here is not designed for that)
git clone https://github.com/DrSensor/rescript.nix.git cd rescript.nix/
Activate nix devshell (you can also use
nix develop
)Let's test out by compiling the simple example
cd examples/simple/ rescript
Seems the social preview didn't work on dev.to 🤔
Uh-oh! I think it looks like it's working now though — at least the GitHub preview.
Is there a special syntax to display social preview (i.e
og:image
) instead of GitHub preview?Oooo I'm sorry I misunderstood ya.
So, all of our embeds are essentially the same and follow this formula:
{% embed https://... %}
There are a couple exceptions here with codepen and codesandbox for instance which read as follow:
{% codepen https://... %}
&{% codesandbox https://... %}
I've logged this issue here.
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what kind of social preview you're expecting, but if we don't provide it, you can consider putting in a feature request here.
I mean the standard opengraph image. GitHub user now can customize the social preview of their repo. To help with the debugging: what I'm seeing now is the preview of README.md file, not the opengraph-image.
Honestly it's not that important for me, I'm just curious if dev.to has alternative syntax to embed a link that display an opengraph-image 🙂 (maybe I miss something in the docs)
Oh right on — thanks for that thorough explanation!
I don't believe we do offer that yet, but that would be nice. I'll mention it to our Product team as something we might consider adding next time we're looking into embeds.
Nothing much. Feeling the side effects of the end of the year and exams. LOL!
Finally, a public announcement that I'm part of international team on LinkedIn :)
(joined around October)
Haha, I'm still kinda in end-of-year vacation mode myself.
Anywho, sounds like a good org you're a part of — it's so cool seeing all the different flags of your different team members. 🙂
