Been scratching my head over this for weeks. I’ve got this super tall, modern staircase—looks great in the daytime, but at night it turns into this dim, echoey cave. I want something that actually lights the space without blinding everyone or looking like a hotel lobby. Pendants? Recessed lights? LED strips on the steps? I keep seeing fancy Pinterest pics, but none say what actually works in real life. If anyone’s dealt with high ceilings and weird shadows on stairs, I’d love to know what you used and whether it was a pain to install or maintain.

Saw this thread and couldn’t resist adding something. I’ve had luck mixing a slim pendant cluster with soft LED strip lighting under each tread to avoid harsh shadows. It keeps the space bright without killing the modern vibe. Has anyone here tried adjustable beam spotlights from the upper landing? They seem promising for super tall spaces, but I’m curious how they look in real life.
I’d go for a long vertical pendant or a cluster chandelier that drops through the whole height, then add soft LED strips on the steps or handrail for depth and safety.
