Dev Diary #4 - Home Screen

It's definitely been a few days hasn't it?!

Although, I have wanted to give an update sooner my ability to work on my fun project has been interrupted by actual work...ugh ya know?

Gotta pay dem bills tho ahaha.

Anyway, besides upcoming deadlines and a minor medical surgery, I've been able to make some small headway on the Home Screen. (and by headway I mean like small update that I'm not liking too much atm xD)

After looking at all the different fun designs I made for the game and screens I was like let's put this baby into Unity whoooo yeah! And then quickly realized I needed to put the first screen in which....I did not actually design out. FUCK.

Welllll that's alright we will get back to da old drawing board and create a newwww design for our home page....yay....

So how do we start this off I mean originally I had a placeholder image and not really many icons at all...bleh.

So I started with a town, or rather AI generating an image of a town in Midjourney. I feel like this should be the center stage and the home of where the user should land. That way they can get to and fro different places such as shops or hatch their eggs or look at their equipment.

So central base - town easy peasy after a bunch of generations I came up with the above.

Now, what to do about these icons and things. Ya know, I didn't really have a good place to start. I was a bit errr burnt out from everything but! I did realize I had some old projects that I worked on a while back that went nowhere and decided to rummage through them for some good uhhh 'inspiration' yeah yeah!

A long time ago I had the fun idea to start an ambitious project of a gacha waifu game. Which went nowhere! But I made some pretty cool designs here I thought, this was also in the early days of AI so my generated characters a bit even more generic than usual. But hey, we're not using those we just want those icons babyyyy yeah!

Image description

After copying and pasting some of the icons and resizing in Figma I had to think about exactly how to lay these icons out that would make sense.

Well this was just a first attempt, so here we go:

Image description

This kinda brings it all together but I am a bit worried about the currencies being on the bottom at the moment. I'm not really too sure on that so I may shrink everything and move it up to the top like ya know allll games have but we'll see.

However, we are far from done with this home screen because:
1) I don't like it yet
2) We have way more many icons to add here to get to the other places quickly

Image description

Cue list of what's to come on the home. I'm sure once I start getting started with these icons and putting it together, I'll have a second wind when it comes to creating and designing this Home screen. Right now not really feeling it but you know those days happen.

Sometimes it's good to just take a step back and second look.

Tempest out!

Why did you decided your game is creating in Unity?
Why don't make your game POC version by simple HTML ?
I think on that can be develop something a much fuster.
But if you decide to create a 3D game of coure Unity is a great choice.
Maybe take a look my JS game: dev.to/pengeszikra/javascript-grea...

Hey Peter! Thanks for checking out my progress so far really appreciate it!

I decided to create this game in Unity because I am very familiar with that platform. Also, I wanted to send this to a mobile store at some point and figured I could do that through Unity. I suppose I could learn Android Studio instead but it would take me a bit of time to figure that out when I want to keep on rolllin here.

As for HTML I don't really have much experience with it. I think the time it would take me to learn how to get started in HTML and the ins and outs to get where I want, I could have already done it in Unity. That's not to say I don't want to learn HTML though! I think it would be better for another project down the road.

I took at look at your game and it looks awesome! That's a great amount of work and the animations of the cards look great! It looks very smooth!

Unity have a seamless capability to add any store. Also have a fare greater 3D capability compared to HTML or even WebGL.
