You landed an $80,000 client year. That feels like $80,000 in your pocket — until self-employment tax, federal brackets, and state income tax take their cut before you pay quarterly estimates.
Most freelancers use the "30% of gross" shortcut. For many earning $40k–$150k net, that shortcut is systematically wrong — and April surprises follow.

Self-employment tax hits net profit, not gross
When you're self-employed you pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare — 15.3% of net self-employment income (gross minus legitimate business expenses).
Example: $80,000 gross − $8,000 expenses = $72,000 SE tax base → ~$11,016 SE tax before income tax even starts.
You can deduct half of SE tax when calculating AGI — a real benefit, but not a refund.
Federal brackets apply to slices, not your whole income
2026 single-filer brackets (simplified):

Only dollars above each threshold get the higher rate. Earning more does not make your entire income taxed at the top bracket.

What to actually set aside (reserve rates)
