Here's the good news: you do not need a $300/hour accountant in year one to stay out of trouble. You need one transaction log, a net-profit number that includes expenses, and a set-aside % you actually transfer before each due date.

When quarterly payments are due
Estimated taxes are due four times a year — roughly April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. They are not evenly spaced calendar quarters. Miss a date and the IRS charges penalties even if you "catch up" at filing time.
Most newly self-employed people fail because they set aside money from gross deposits, not net profit after expenses and platform fees.
What you actually owe (simplified)
As a 1099 worker you owe:
- Income tax — based on your federal (and possibly state) brackets on net profit
- Self-employment tax — roughly 15.3% on net profit (Social Security + Medicare)
A practical first-year shortcut many solo operators use: set aside 25–30% of net profit each month into a separate savings account. Not perfect — but it beats scrambling in April.
