Most marketplace sellers panic when the 1099-K arrives in January.
The number on the form looks much larger than what actually landed in your bank. That is because the 1099-K reports gross buyer payments, not net payout. Report that gross as income without deducting your fees and you pay tax on money you never kept.

Three things every US creator/seller needs to know
1. The 1099-K threshold is not dropping to $600
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (July 2025) repealed the planned $600 threshold and restored the $20,000 + 200 transactions bar. The form is not getting more common — but your income is taxable whether or not one arrives.
2. Marketplaces collect sales tax — you still report gross sales federally
As a marketplace facilitator, platforms like TikTok Shop calculate, collect, and remit sales tax in most states. You do not file those state returns. But you still report gross sales on your federal return and deduct legitimate business expenses.
3. Self-employment tax + quarterly payments
1099-K income means you are a sole proprietor. You owe ~15.3% SE tax on net profit, and because platforms do not withhold anything, you need quarterly estimated tax payments (Form 1040-ES).
The biggest mistake: treating gross as taxable income
