Take It Slow & Say Hello: A Sloth’s Guide to Making Friends Online

Introducing yourself to a new online community is exciting, but it can also be intimidating. Here are some ideas for intros that will help you connect with other members of the DEV and CodeNewbie communities:

  1. Share your background and interests. This can help others get to know you and find common ground for conversation.
  2. Talk about why you joined the community and what you hope to gain from being a part of it. This can help you find others who have similar goals or interests.
  3. Ask for advice or recommendations. This can help you build relationships and learn more about the community.
  4. Share a fun fact about yourself. It’s a great ice-breaker and conversation starter.
  5. Talk about your favorite hobby or activity. This can help you find common ground and build relationships.
  6. Say Hi! to others in the thread. If you see somebody introducing themselves, consider dropping a like or a response to show them some appreciation. Enthusiasm is contagious!

Hi Everyone!

I’m Anthony (I suppose my display name was a giveaway to that). I’m a .NET (C#) and Angular developer, who has also used React in the past. I've also written a few WPF apps and had a go at using Avalonia.

I’m fairly new on here and am trying my hand at writing stories to share my experiences and knowledge so far as a developer. I hope that I can write something that’s both educational and entertaining to read.

Development wise, I’m the author of Working Files List (a free Visual Studio plugin) and have also written some simple browser games (here and here) while trying to learn TypeScript and React.

I’m also interested in music production and think I might pick up drawing again some day.

Thanks for taking a look and the compliments!

Please feel free to use Working Files List if you think it will be useful. Unfortunately, I don't have much free time to put towards developing it further these days. That said, I don't think there are any showstopping bugs in it, and I still use it daily when working server-side.

Hey Anthony, nice to meet you! I'm kind of the opposite, coming from Angular and end up working in React :p Love your enthusiasm in making various side projects!

Hi Patrick

Was React something that you chose to do?

Personally, React was my first front-end library. I then changed jobs and ended up working on an AngularJS codebase. Eventually, I was in a position where my company was choosing between React and Angular because AngularJS was being discontinued. They chose Angular. It's nice because it gave me more experience of different front end technologies. I like it too, though I sometimes wonder if some things would have been easier in React - I guess they say the grass is always greener on the other side :)

I felt the same for the saying "the grass is always greener on the other side"! When I look back to Angular and the problem my previous job, I felt I can do better now haha. Maybe because I'm more used to React, I still prefer React. Some upsides are that, there are way more resources and open source packages and community around React. And it feels more JS/TS (while Angular feels more C# personally), flexible and less opinionated to me.

However, greater flexibility comes as a cost that it might be easier to write low quality code. Also, when talking about React as a library VS Angular as a framework, React dev might need some more libraries to make it complete, while Angular is more "batteries included" with routing and other utils. My last word - it might be a question of preference :p not something that has an absolute answer.

Completely agree. Angular feels more opinionated, and 'complete' as a framework. But that also means projects can need a bit more setup.

I think it ultimately depends on the type of project. Smaller projects might benefit from using React while larger and more structured projects might be better with Angular. That's no criticism of either and certainly not a rule either - just the impression I got so far from using both.

Hi Nghia

Do you mean listening, or writing?

For listening, quite a few: Classical, (some) Country, (some) Electronica, Jazz, Pop, (some) Punk Rock, Rock, Symphonic Metal, Synthwave.

In terms of writing: I've done a bit of instrumental rock, cinematic, and more recently I've dipped into synthy electronic music.

I’ll go first: Hello, my name is Sloan the Official DEV Moderator (Sloan, for short), and I'm a three-toed sloth. I am a skilled climber and have very sharp claws and dextrous fingers, with which I enjoy creating abstract art. I'm interested in learning a programming language that's suited to my slow and deliberate nature. Any recommendations? I'm a great listener and I'm here to provide a calming presence. Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Hi All!

I'm Taeho. I'm currently learning to code. I can create CRUD apps but I still have to look at my notes. I've come a long way and I am very proud of it!

I picked up programming in 30s, and am now taking it seriously.

I want to write for older people who are intimidated or struggle to transition into programming.

I would like to network with other like minded individuals and be a net positive to the community.

I love muay thai, combat sports, indoor rowing, and hiking. I like to cook with the ingredients in my fridge.

Say hi if you like peanuts!

Welcome! We have some similar hobbies! How long have you been practicing muay Thai?I used to practice Pencak silat, and I also love indoor rowing (do it almost every day) and hiking (as much as I can where I live am in the beautiful PNW in the US). I'm intrigued my your mission to write for older people who are intimidated by programming; how did you find that path?

Hey!
I did mt for 5yrs ish (?). My gym closed down at the start of the pandemic and I haven't found a gym since. That's when I switched to indoor rowing and hiking. I miss MT dearly! Pencak silat looks cool!

I've joined 100Devs and the lead instructor is all about inclusion. I know there are other folks like me out there (non tech work exp, second career / industry switch) so I'd like to encourage them to keep going. I'm experimenting on content type (short form, long form, infographics) and outreach methods.

I am following codenewbie on twitter. See you there and thanks for the support!

What are your immediate goals at Forem?

Wow! I'm going to check out 100Devs. I can definitely relate to your experience as someone who made a mid-career switch into tech. It can be intimidating, but it's also been incredibly rewarding for me to learn new skills and challenge myself.

I'm one of the community team members working behind the scenes on DEV, so I'm always out and about in the comments, listening to what our members have to say and learning about their experiences. I'm eager to keep tabs on your experimentation with different types of content and outreach methods. Do keep us all posted on DEV and reach out to the community to let us know where we can support!

Hey All, I'm Sharad.
I am a self professed geek and tinkerer.

I started coding in cobol (I am not that old though) in the dark ages and have since had the opportunity to work with fortran, c, C++, pascal, java. fast forward to a few years ago, I am now an angular and node fan and love playing around with various frameworks built for that stack.

I look forward to see you all in the forums and in article threads.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Emily and I just started my journey in the coding world. I am excited to start the Coding Bootcamp at a University near by. I did my research for the last couple of months hesitating to take the leap into this new career change, which I finally did and here I am.

I initially come from a healthcare background, was in nursing school then ended up switching majors into getting a Health Science Degree (COVID definitely was the reason I switched). As I start a new career into Full Stack Development, I am nervous and excited to see where I end up. I will keep you guys updated while I start this new journey.

Best of luck to those who are also starting their journey! Excited to be here :)

Finally joined (via Forem) since I'm looking for more folks working on open source community and governance issues. 😸

Sustainability is a huge issue, both for individual developers, various FOSS projects, and for parts of the supply chain ecosystem as a whole. There are a number of experienced open source peeps working on different content and programs to help everyone with sustainability; I'm trying to keep the best top-level content linked here:
