I've been freelancing for awhile because I was very attracted to the digital-nomad lifestyle: i.e., I wanted to live abroad but still work jobs that were relevant for the SF Bay Area. It was a great experience. I was able to learn two foreign languages and see, smell, hear, taste and experience a great deal of new things.

Yeah the nomad lifestyle is definitely something I'd like to experience at some point. Did you find it hard learning two new languages? I felt like I picked up Spanish well enough before in South America but not sure if it applies to other Latin-based languages in Europe. Trying to apply for a student exchange to Austria next year (fingers crossed!) so that's why I'm asking :)

I didn't find it hard to learn two new languages only because I'm entirely passionate about foreign languages. Spanish is helpful but not necessarily for German lol. You'll find some common threads but not as many as you would between Spanish and French for example... You never know though—sometimes a random skill can come in handy at an unlikely, opportune moment.

Hi everybody! I'm a junior developer from Scotland, been programming about 10 months now and working as a developer for about 3. I work in .net and PHP/JS at work but at home I dabble in a bit of everything. As I'm self taught I'm trying to follow one of the P1xt guides to set myself up really well for the future.
The number one resource I'd recommend is CS50. I think that's single handedly responsible for getting me a dev job. Fantastic lectures by a great teacher with interesting and challenging assignments!
I too recommend CS50. That course was highly informative and entertaining. Made me wish I could have attended Harvard and gone in person. David Malon was a great instructor. It was the perfect introduction to computer science.

i like the “Learn ___ the Hard Way” series by Zed Shaw. as a chemist who taught myself some Matlab in grad school, i hadn’t been exposed to a lot of the fundamentals of programming. Zed’s Python book introduced me to those fundamentals as well as the Python language. funny enough, it helped me write better Matlab code, too! it also gave me the confidence to learn other programming languages, like PHP and JS, by diving in and just building something. :)

My recommended resource is Traversy Media by Brad Traversy, he's very knowledgable and he explains the material well. I'd also like to recommend Maximilliam Schwarzmueller's Udemy Angular course. He goes very deep in detail on everything Angular.
Although I've yet to build anything big with it yet, I also love working with the Python programming language.

Will B. here. I've been on the fun ride of growth over 12 years starting professionally in 2006. Starting in print design, migrating to digital and on to web over the years. Thrown many odd challenges and helping with issues way above my head (the fresh set of eyes....always key). I ended up doing alot of front-end "development" over the last 12 years at the same company. However, I've never truly considered myself a developer of any sort. Along this time I've become stale and get by doing the easy server/hosting management, CMS theme molding, and "simple" stuff, analytics, blah, etc.
I'm here now to learn, interact, stay up-to-date and to build a solid foundation to bridge my gaps between front and back-end development.
The starting point, React Fullstack. My daily realms are out-of-the-box CMS's, .net, php and all the css's that make something pretty on top of all the boring server stuff. I feel like a jack of many trades but a master of none (except css)

I'm sure someone's going to recommend Sandi Metz OOP books because they're great, so I'll go with David Bryant Copeland's Rails, Angular, Postgres, and Bootstrap, Second Edition. This book really gave me a solid foundation of working with the front end and Rails, as well as a ton of Postgres tips, both general and specific to Rails. I recommend it as a book for anyone finishing a bootcamp and plan to stick with Rails.

20+ software dev experience , started life at the unix command window running scripts to build programs, now I find myself on a mac at the unix command window running scripts to build programs albeit with gradlew :) Lots has changed in 20 years but not the fundamentals have not.

I'm a Swedish "developer". I choose to put that within quotes as I work a whole lot with the ops part of the job. Not that I don't get to write any code anymore, but I feel that in my current position, I learn more from the operations than from the code I write.
I'm involved in two businesses, one (Jitesoft) which I am owner and only employee of, and another (KRIG Collective) in which I am CTO and have the main responsibility over most of the dev's and op's.
I started playing around with code back in the early nineties, this mainly due to my father working with computers and stuff, but it was first in my teens that I started to create stuff for real (webpages and smaller games). I always aimed for the game-dev life, which I actually succeeded in after 6 or so years of studies at different schools.
After a couple of years as a game developer, the company I worked for went bankrupt (no, not due to me, hehe), and I started to work with consulting jobs and web + handheld development. five or six years later I hit a wall and after recovery I started my own business.
I'm quite happy with my position and I hope that I can be of use on this site in some way ;)

I have a career of designing Integrated Circuits, programming FPGAs, and developping applications. Grew up with Fortran 77, Modula-2, Pascal, and K&R. Loved C. Adored C++. Flatout flabbergasted with C++11 and C++14...
And with those last C++ gems, I'm trying to figure out how far Meta-programming can get me into solving my problems at compile time.
Only to be disappointed to get things to work, and then stop working in new releases of compilers. But I still think it is a good thing to stay on top of this more recent branch of programming.
Although I know I'm playing with "atomic" weapons (to steal Herb Sutter's thunder from his talk on C++, I am also amazed by how the simple things are even more important. Listening to the likes of Herb, Scott Meyers, Howard Hinnen, Daveed Vandevoorde, Bjarne Stroustrup... always makes me realize how little I know.
And here are my apologies to the C++ greats that I haven't mentioned, but still admire for all the things you teach me and the programmer community.

I a have been a student of computer science components, never really aced any one of them because each of them is fascinating and I have kept on reading up on some of them. I particularly an attracted by the limitless refinement that is possible in deploying software library, language, framework, hardware , design patterns, data mining, data warehouse, BPMN, rule engines.
A few books that I can recall if special liking are design patterns by gang of four, code complete 2, PHP in action (brilliantly written, for any language), C++ by Bjarne straustrope, scalable website by Carl Henderson...I have programmed in PHP, Java and cold fusion + openBD. Keen to tackle an architectural challenge for scale

Hi guys, I'm a junior software developer from Oxfordshire, England and I'm currently working for a company called Adactus Ltd who specialize in bespoke websites for companies. We mainly work in ASP .Net MVC so C# is my main language which I've been doing for almost 3 years now (in January 2019). I got my job through an apprenticeship so I'm currently doing a degree alongside my work, it's a lot of work and I have almost no social life because of it but I enjoy it so can't complain!
I don't have any projects that I've done on my own, they've all been things at work that I've been part of a team so I've recently decided to build my own site and I'm going down the .Net core route with it. After I've built that I hope to try and get some clients of my own to build websites for so I have more productive stuff to do in my free time.

I had a very long career break -since 2017 - and I just started working again couple of months ago - that's almost like two years! Although I feel like I could have optimised my schedule and could have been even more productive, this break was perhaps the best decision I ever made for myself! ;) Got into teaching, writing and a whole lot of activities. I've been an active member of communities like freeCodeCamp, Code Like A Girl, and Towards Data Science - I write for these publications and also do a lot of editing work - so if you want to exchange any kind of writing tips, feel free to holler at me!

Hey all! Just hobbled over this while actually about to do readings for a religion course. I'm currently learning how to make a web site using React.js for the front end, Spring REST for some API endpoints and a little Firebase for authentication and database. This is all to create a little job search web app for my honours project. A little victory just happened as I have conquered the forms and authentication hurdle and the whole thing seems to work great! I'll be tackling the other part of querying postings soon.
