The Hitchhiker's Guide to Python is a classic, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into or expand their understanding of the language! :)
Oh wait, I just realized I totally misread your comment...
Nice, do you think it's readable for someone who doesn't know Python, but knows a similar language (Ruby, JS, etc)?
Great tip, thanks.
Hi there,
My name is Paige and I'm back in the SF Bay Area after spending five years in France and Denmark.
I'm a Computational Linguist with data-science leanings. I work remotely for a Paris-based startup that is building an ecosystem of language tools.
I just finished a master's in the social sciences with a slant towards data analysis. In a past life, I taught university-level English and translated mobile apps. I spend my idle hours as a craftsperson. Feel free to peruse my portfolio for some of my creative and intellectual undertakings: somepaiges.net
After several years of freelancing, I'm pretty sick of WFH and would love to put down some roots. I'm looking to branch out and eventually find a full-time role in SF as a junior Product Analyst, Data Analyst, Data Scientist or Product Manager. I love NLP and data-driven storytelling. Jupyter/Python/Pandas/NLTK/spaCy and sometimes R.
Interested in garage-band startups, companies with a transatlantic foothold, mission-driven products, lifelong learning and growth opportunities.
Welcome Paige! Great to see another Jupyter-loving data scientist coming on board, we're definitely short on #jupyter posts so looking forward to seeing some stories along those lines. There's also a lot of #career posts you might be interested in checking out. What made you decide to go from freelancing to full-time though? I've always wanted to go the other way (full-time to freelancing) and just interested to know why someone would go the other way.
P.S. Love the tiger travel photos by the way! Used to do a lot of bokeh shots myself :)
Hi Wei Ji,
Great to hear from you! Thanks for the recommendations and props.
I've been freelancing for awhile because I was very attracted to the digital-nomad lifestyle: i.e., I wanted to live abroad but still work jobs that were relevant for the SF Bay Area. It was a great experience. I was able to learn two foreign languages and see, smell, hear, taste and experience a great deal of new things.
I'd love to see some of your bokehs!
Yeah the nomad lifestyle is definitely something I'd like to experience at some point. Did you find it hard learning two new languages? I felt like I picked up Spanish well enough before in South America but not sure if it applies to other Latin-based languages in Europe. Trying to apply for a student exchange to Austria next year (fingers crossed!) so that's why I'm asking :)
Not a perfect bokeh but here's one I dug up from my rusty archive:
I like it. It is soft-spoken yet speaks for itself.
I didn't find it hard to learn two new languages only because I'm entirely passionate about foreign languages. Spanish is helpful but not necessarily for German lol. You'll find some common threads but not as many as you would between Spanish and French for example... You never know though—sometimes a random skill can come in handy at an unlikely, opportune moment.
Also crossing my fingers for your exchange next year!
Yes it's funny how languages work aye. Best way is always to just immerse yourself into a foreign country! Anyways, thanks for your thoughtful comments and once again, welcome to dev.to :D
Hi, Paige.
Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s very inspiring to read as an aspiring freelancer. Hopefully I have an opportunity to travel as well. Welcome :)
Thanks Sharon! Welcome to you too. What are you interested in and what brought you to dev.to?
I want to connect with like-minded individuals and figure out my way around freelancing/working remotely/working abroad—hopefully getting advice from people with experience similar to yours when I’m at that stage. So, networking is the short answer. 😊
Welcome to dev.to, Paige! Nice to have you here.
Hi everybody! I'm a junior developer from Scotland, been programming about 10 months now and working as a developer for about 3. I work in .net and PHP/JS at work but at home I dabble in a bit of everything. As I'm self taught I'm trying to follow one of the P1xt guides to set myself up really well for the future.
The number one resource I'd recommend is CS50. I think that's single handedly responsible for getting me a dev job. Fantastic lectures by a great teacher with interesting and challenging assignments!
I too recommend CS50. That course was highly informative and entertaining. Made me wish I could have attended Harvard and gone in person. David Malon was a great instructor. It was the perfect introduction to computer science.
Thank you for that recommendation. I’m definitely checking it out. 👍
edx platform as a whole is pretty swell.

Hello everyone,
First thing first i gonna say that my english is awful, but still i hope we could get along each other.
I'm currently a C# developer. But still... a beginner in programming field because i start programming for about 2 month and still not very confident in my skills much. But still i hope to advance my skill more an become a data scientist, especially machine learning. I really fascinate about it when i first heard about how google assistant work in my class since 2016. And decide to follow it when i join Uni.
For TL;DR I'm a noob in programming and hope i could get along with you guys.
Hi, 1211. 😊
Your English is great! I understood everything you said. I am also new to programming and very excited about this community.

G'day / Kia Ora
I am an Australian born New Zealand resident. Therefore I am a "Kaussie" by my definition.
I am a developer, network engineer, trainer, writer and ... a ton else.
I am a huge fan of .NET / C# / Winforms and SQL Server. I'm sure I can pickup and move to just about any other database and most other languages but I like where I am
Oh ... I gotta say that I HATE web development.
Sorry, but mixing HTML and CSS and {xxxx} framework and then adding the back end is for you young guys. I'm 57 ... and prefer things a bit more simple.
I have been mainly focused on one project for the last 23 years so now just sticking my head back out of the sand to see what the real world looks like today.

Hi Dale,
It is good to read about you. Thanks for writing.
well, i found this community through google and i am fascinated with the interest of this community, i am learning django at the moment...i am a very happy and interesting guy..i love to learn and work hard always..i am open for any new tech stack
Hi everyone, I'm new to web development. Just jumping in here to say that I love JS and Python, and that once I've created a couple of projects on my on, I'll be taking Go for a nice, smooth dance to the stars.
i like the “Learn ___ the Hard Way” series by Zed Shaw. as a chemist who taught myself some Matlab in grad school, i hadn’t been exposed to a lot of the fundamentals of programming. Zed’s Python book introduced me to those fundamentals as well as the Python language. funny enough, it helped me write better Matlab code, too! it also gave me the confidence to learn other programming languages, like PHP and JS, by diving in and just building something. :)
Good Evening everyone! I found this on Twitter, in a tweet from Brian Halpern, so I decided to see what it's about. I was trained through Revature as a software tester, so a lot of my training is both in Java Enterprise as well as in Node.js. I'm hoping to be a web developer
My recommended resource is Traversy Media by Brad Traversy, he's very knowledgable and he explains the material well. I'd also like to recommend Maximilliam Schwarzmueller's Udemy Angular course. He goes very deep in detail on everything Angular.
Although I've yet to build anything big with it yet, I also love working with the Python programming language.
Hi all - currently 12 months into building lexico, which started off as a ML-assisted legal review but is now branching off into broader paperwork automation. Based on C#/.NET/VueJS/Azure (with some weird things like WCF thrown into the mix too).
Keen to share war stories/best practice around the whole stack (both technical and non-technical)!
Drop me a note if you're in Melbourne, always keen to meet new people. Just got back from USA too and anticipate will be travelling back there in the near future.
Hi folks! Feel like I’m late to the party here but I’m Adam- some know me as Cobra Winfrey via CodePen where I spend probably too much of my idle time whipping up UI animation concepts and CSS illustrations.
I work remotely (from Tampa Bay) for a San Francisco-based API microservices platform called Kong, as a front end web developer.
Mostly looking to level up my JS and advanced CSS skills, which I do through online learning and participating in welcoming communities such as this. Nice to meet y’all :)
Hi all! I am Taha.
I've been an app developer for 10 years. My main focus was desktop programming in my career for the most part. I participated in big HR projects in Turkey for the state. I was also a part of a rheumatology health project in which C#, WPF and PRISM technologies involved.
Now I changed the course of my career towards mobile app development. I am developing cross platform apps using Xamarin Native. C# and VS are my indispensable environment. I worked with XCode and Android Studio too. But none of which satisfied me in general. I don't want to be a language and IDE religious but I think MS is the most suitable envionment for me IMHO.
I try to
I am here to learn something new from you, valuable people. And I'm ready to share what I know with the others.
Happy coding!
Hey Everyone!
I am Rajan, I am 17 years old and I am a Software developer.
I've been programming since 2014, and I know Programming languages such as C++, Python, HTML, etc.
As of now I am developing a Database Engine in Python while learning OpenGL for the development of a Game Concept I have in mind.
The reason I decided to resort to this community is because I believe in the phenomenal power of connections one may have with other people belonging to the same industry. Therefore, I'll be happy to connect with more people with a dream and ambition to make a change in this world.
I have a dream and you may too, so let's make it a reality together.
Thanks.

Hello All,
I am Swarup . Its great to join this community which has awesome articles and blogs. I always feel blogs are more valuable than tutorials, since it talks about real experience rather than a robotic tone of steps to do.
About me, I am a Full Stack Developer since 1 year. Before that I had 1 year of Test Automation experience and 2 years of manual testing.
I have recently started blogging. I started blogging in medium , later realised dev.to is the correct platform to blog.
My medium blogs can be found at: medium.com/@swarupmahapatra
I like topics around devops / design patterns / functional programming.
I have programmed in Java , Ruby , Python , JavaScript (in NodeJS)

Hello All,
Will B. here. I've been on the fun ride of growth over 12 years starting professionally in 2006. Starting in print design, migrating to digital and on to web over the years. Thrown many odd challenges and helping with issues way above my head (the fresh set of eyes....always key). I ended up doing alot of front-end "development" over the last 12 years at the same company. However, I've never truly considered myself a developer of any sort. Along this time I've become stale and get by doing the easy server/hosting management, CMS theme molding, and "simple" stuff, analytics, blah, etc.
I'm here now to learn, interact, stay up-to-date and to build a solid foundation to bridge my gaps between front and back-end development.
The starting point, React Fullstack. My daily realms are out-of-the-box CMS's, .net, php and all the css's that make something pretty on top of all the boring server stuff. I feel like a jack of many trades but a master of none (except css)
I look forward to reading and interacting with everyone here in the Dev.to community.
Signed.

I enjoy: Outside...Backpacking (JMT '16)...Hikes, snow, snowboarding, learning....when I'm not social drinking (the problem. honesty)
Hello everybody,
I would like to share my excitement about the possibilities NodeJS/N-API opens. All kinds of communication between the JavaScript and the C sides of your app are now possible. More details here:

I would be happy to connect with those who is interested in speeding up their NodeJS app with C addons. Cheers,
Alec
Hi everyone!
I'm Yassine KLILICH, I'm attempting to be a full-stack web developer based on JS/Node.js. And what brought me to this community is there are good articles that person could take benefits from them.
Hey,
I'm Casey. I'm 18 and from England. I've been programming for around 4 years now and am mainly interested in neural networks and machine learning.
I'll be starting uni next year so am in the middle of applications and interviews right now!
Allo, welcome to dev.to :)
I'm sure someone's going to recommend Sandi Metz OOP books because they're great, so I'll go with David Bryant Copeland's Rails, Angular, Postgres, and Bootstrap, Second Edition. This book really gave me a solid foundation of working with the front end and Rails, as well as a ton of Postgres tips, both general and specific to Rails. I recommend it as a book for anyone finishing a bootcamp and plan to stick with Rails.
Hello all,
I'm here to learn about the newest development tools that are out there, as well as learn about project collaboration and container-based technology. The posts I've read so far have been amazing. Thank you for having me.
Hi there! I'm Tomek, web dev from Poland. Currently I work as front-end architect within React and NodeJS stack. Privately, I keep finding out the amazingness of Python and getting to learn Java. When not coding or browsing memes, I like to play video games, read books or watch something (movie, series).
Hi,
Just joined this via twitter.
20+ software dev experience , started life at the unix command window running scripts to build programs, now I find myself on a mac at the unix command window running scripts to build programs albeit with gradlew :) Lots has changed in 20 years but not the fundamentals have not.
I hope I can learn lots on this forum + contribute as best I can .
Look forward to interacting and posting as I go.

Hi there!
I'm a Swedish "developer". I choose to put that within quotes as I work a whole lot with the ops part of the job. Not that I don't get to write any code anymore, but I feel that in my current position, I learn more from the operations than from the code I write.
I'm involved in two businesses, one (Jitesoft) which I am owner and only employee of, and another (KRIG Collective) in which I am CTO and have the main responsibility over most of the dev's and op's.
I started playing around with code back in the early nineties, this mainly due to my father working with computers and stuff, but it was first in my teens that I started to create stuff for real (webpages and smaller games). I always aimed for the game-dev life, which I actually succeeded in after 6 or so years of studies at different schools.
After a couple of years as a game developer, the company I worked for went bankrupt (no, not due to me, hehe), and I started to work with consulting jobs and web + handheld development. five or six years later I hit a wall and after recovery I started my own business.
I'm quite happy with my position and I hope that I can be of use on this site in some way ;)

Also....
Outside of the dev-life, I'm a married man, 32 years old, father of three monsters, and yeah... that's me... (sadly I don't really know what more to say about me... :P )
Hey all, it's Glo, I would love to connect with you on LinkedIn if possible: linkedin.com/in/gloriafelicia & Github: github.com/glo26 | The one programming resource I would highly recommend would be Eloquent JavaScript: A Modern Introduction to Programming by Marijn Haverbeke. :)
Hello!
My name is Igor.
I am a web application developer and am currently trying to create my own software development company.
For web development I use VueJS, NodeJS, Angular, Quasar, MySQl, Oracle, MSSQL and other libraries and technologies
I have experience with big data: deploying and using a cluster hashup, data processing (Spark, Scala), a web interface for visualizing the results.
If you want to understand it yourself - try to explain it to people
To study new topics, I try to write and publish articles.
Hello fellow developers 👋 May KISS be with you!
I’m from Indianapolis, and I am a junior dev. I currently work with java, and I’d love to find some great resources to further my skills. If you have any suggestions please comment. I came from twitter. I recently started the 100 days of code challenge in hopes to be a better dev and be better at my job.
hey all; I can recommend Michael Hartl's Ruby on Rails Tutorial; Zed Shaw's Learn Ruby the Hard Way, and Russ Olsen's Eloquent Ruby book as premium resources for teaching yourself the Ruby language and the Rails framework.
Hello fellow Dev.to-ers
My name is Jesse and I've heard the sunrise singing (ask me about it sometime). I'm usually a lurker but today I just have the urge to finally introduce myself and hopefully to be a lot more involved with the community.
I just wanted to say 👋 and that I have been super blessed to enjoy the quality posts that people share. I also love the fact that everyone is so supportive of each other... Overall, a nice community that I'd love to be a part of!
As for the answer to the question... 🤔
I would recommend Codrops for all you aesthetically-pleasing-design lovers.
And that's it! I hope to make some cyberspace connections with other passionate people!
Hello!
My name is Arthur and I'm a student at the University of Central Florida. Currently interested in the best web development practices. So I've been learning JavaScript because I've only ever really known HTML and CSS well.
I'm also interested in machine learning/data science so if you could reference me to some great articles that'll be cool. :)
Fun fact: I like learning about music and play volleyball.
Hi,
I'm Halil from Istanbul, Turkey. I'm a remote software engineer at MojiLaLa Inc., a San Jose based startup, whose main product is Leo AR. Since the application is multi-platform and requires development in 4 different technology stacks solely on the client side, I can say I'm proficient in React Native development, native iOS and Android development, and Unity3D development, which is my main responsibility in the team.
I am interested in anything related to 3D and game dev, but I mainly signed up for this site because I would like to have discussions on any subject relating to programming.
Hi all, I'm new here! It's quite demoralizing having to originate from a continent where technology inclination is relatively low. I'm very new in software development; specializing in JavaScript and other languages. I hope to learn more in here and to share my tiny knowledge. Thanks
I have a career of designing Integrated Circuits, programming FPGAs, and developping applications. Grew up with Fortran 77, Modula-2, Pascal, and K&R. Loved C. Adored C++. Flatout flabbergasted with C++11 and C++14...
And with those last C++ gems, I'm trying to figure out how far Meta-programming can get me into solving my problems at compile time.
Only to be disappointed to get things to work, and then stop working in new releases of compilers. But I still think it is a good thing to stay on top of this more recent branch of programming.
Although I know I'm playing with "atomic" weapons (to steal Herb Sutter's thunder from his talk on C++, I am also amazed by how the simple things are even more important. Listening to the likes of Herb, Scott Meyers, Howard Hinnen, Daveed Vandevoorde, Bjarne Stroustrup... always makes me realize how little I know.
And here are my apologies to the C++ greats that I haven't mentioned, but still admire for all the things you teach me and the programmer community.
And with this, I'm saying hello to this community, eager to learn from all of you! Up front: THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
Hello dev.to community - I just stumbled upon this amazing community and I felt I need to signup
My name is Alin, I'm from Iasi, Romania and I'm working on 🍩donut - a chat app that let's you talk with your friends... anonymously.

Hey there, I'm Dominic, I enjoy building things, been into SaaS since 2008. I just launched a book on using Go to build a SaaS last September.
I'm currently very interested in Erlang and getting starting with FP. Looking forward for joining this community.
Howdy,
I'm Roland Shield and I am attempting, once again, to do this stuff on a (near) daily basis, such that I might make forward progress more quickly.
I stumbled across a blog entitled The Zen of Programming (Ali Spittel) on Medium while thumbing through my phone one evening and it inspired me to get off my duff and so here I am!
I want it all! But I am strapped for time. Sound familiar?
But I want to be able to do the following soon:
If I were to choose one resource, I would choose Ms. Spittel's blog, for reasons described above. But also, I would do the same with FreeCodeCamp and/or Hack Club, depending on the person asking.
Hi all! I've a junior web developer working at a serverless startup in Portland, OR. I finished a full-stack Python/JavaScript code school program in the spring and have dived head-first into React and Node and am loving every day of it.
Hey all,
Currently starting back up learning core web development skills (been off and on for last 3 years). Focusing on Accessibility and CSS right now. I have found a lot of information from the dev.to community, so I thought I would try to participate in sharing the knowledge.
What’s up, fellow sorcerers?
Relatively new to coding - I’ve been teaching myself for about 6 months now and have my eyes set on landing a role as a front-end developer in the next 6 months. Focusing mostly on JavaScript & dabbling with React (mostly Gatsby). Any advice is appreciated. Looking forward to learning from you all!
Just like yours, I follow different tech blogs, and gizmo updates on various sites. The current innovation and updates of the field lures me to express my views and thoughts on certain topics.
I am looking to contribute a post in your blog and it will be great if you allow so.
Hi, my name is Jason. I'm an American living in Germany. I studied on my own to become a software developer as it has been an interest of mine since I first touched a computer. I've been working in the industry now for a good 10 years, and still trying to learn more. Primarily I work in Java but I've been known to go play with other technologies just to try something new.
Looking forward to see what this community is all about.
Hello everyone!
My name is Jerry Dayne.
My quest to being better at web app developer got me here. Am kinda new to coding, Javascript is my playground now, atleast untill we get more familiar with each other.
So, anyone with directives, recommendations, advice or anything that will set me up to being really good at web should please help.
Thank you 😁.
The essay How I organize my knowledge as a Software Engineer brought me here. It's really helpful for me.
I a have been a student of computer science components, never really aced any one of them because each of them is fascinating and I have kept on reading up on some of them. I particularly an attracted by the limitless refinement that is possible in deploying software library, language, framework, hardware , design patterns, data mining, data warehouse, BPMN, rule engines.
A few books that I can recall if special liking are design patterns by gang of four, code complete 2, PHP in action (brilliantly written, for any language), C++ by Bjarne straustrope, scalable website by Carl Henderson...I have programmed in PHP, Java and cold fusion + openBD. Keen to tackle an architectural challenge for scale
Excited about joining this community. I am a lifelong learner and at the moment interested in diving deeper into networking and operating systems.

Hi guys, I'm a junior software developer from Oxfordshire, England and I'm currently working for a company called Adactus Ltd who specialize in bespoke websites for companies. We mainly work in ASP .Net MVC so C# is my main language which I've been doing for almost 3 years now (in January 2019). I got my job through an apprenticeship so I'm currently doing a degree alongside my work, it's a lot of work and I have almost no social life because of it but I enjoy it so can't complain!
I don't have any projects that I've done on my own, they've all been things at work that I've been part of a team so I've recently decided to build my own site and I'm going down the .Net core route with it. After I've built that I hope to try and get some clients of my own to build websites for so I have more productive stuff to do in my free time.
I look forward to hearing from you all and being part of the community!
Happy programming :)

Hi everyone! Discovered this website not too long ago from twitter, so I guess I'm late to the party.
My name is Ashwin, I'm 26 years old and I've been working as a full-stack software engineer with startups in India. I've also been dabbling with quite a bit of Machine Learning / Deep Learning as well. My interests (in no particular order) include programming, user experience, AI, fitness, and astronomy, so if you like these, please hit me up. :)
I had a very long career break -since 2017 - and I just started working again couple of months ago - that's almost like two years! Although I feel like I could have optimised my schedule and could have been even more productive, this break was perhaps the best decision I ever made for myself! ;) Got into teaching, writing and a whole lot of activities. I've been an active member of communities like freeCodeCamp, Code Like A Girl, and Towards Data Science - I write for these publications and also do a lot of editing work - so if you want to exchange any kind of writing tips, feel free to holler at me!
My goal is to eventually switch from full stack into something that's completely data science / deep learning oriented. But as it turns out, it's a whole lot harder than it looks like! I did however manage to do lots of side projects and write blog posts along the way - medium.com/@booleanhunter
The most important thing that I have learnt, after working in extremely fast-paced environments before -
I'm curious to hear from y'all as to what are your favourite past-times / activities that you do?
P.S: I'm going to take time and read through all the awesome posts in this welcome thread, and see all the book recommendations. :D
Hi all, I'm Ion from Romania. I'm a software developer. Looking forward to learn more.
Hey all! Just hobbled over this while actually about to do readings for a religion course. I'm currently learning how to make a web site using React.js for the front end, Spring REST for some API endpoints and a little Firebase for authentication and database. This is all to create a little job search web app for my honours project. A little victory just happened as I have conquered the forms and authentication hurdle and the whole thing seems to work great! I'll be tackling the other part of querying postings soon. Happy to see some cool stuff on this page! Cheers!
Welcome welcome welcome!!!
