Is RizomUV Worth It for Hard Surface Models?

I spent hours fixing UV islands. Packing looked messy. Then I saw how fast professionals unwrap.

This post is part of my daily learning journey in game development.

I’m sharing what I learn each day — the basics, the confusion, and the real progress — from the perspective of a beginner.

On Day 68 of my game development journey, I explored the difference between Blender’s UV tools and RizomUV.

What I Used to Think

Blender has UV tools.

So why use anything else?

I tried unwrapping complex hard-surface models inside Blender.

Seams were fine.

But packing felt inefficient.

Islands overlapped.

A lot of UV space was wasted.

It felt slow and manual.

What I Realized

Blender’s UV tools are general-purpose.

RizomUV is specialized.

It focuses only on UV unwrapping and packing.

That means:

  • More advanced packing algorithms
  • Faster seam workflow for complex meshes
  • More precise control for hard-surface assets

Professionals use RizomUV because production pipelines value speed and consistency.

Better packing means better texture space usage.

Why This Matters

For learning, Blender is more than enough.

For production-level assets, time efficiency matters.

If time equals money, dedicated tools make sense.

It’s not about Blender being weak.

It’s about workflow optimization.

RizomUV isn’t necessary for beginners.

But knowing industry tools exist is important.

Practical Fix

  • Master seam placement in Blender first
  • Practice manual packing and understand UV space
  • Try the RizomUV trial before investing
  • Compare packing results side by side
  • Decide based on your project scale

One Lesson for Beginners

  • Tools amplify workflow, not skill
  • Blender is enough for small and learning projects
  • Dedicated tools help at scale
  • Don’t buy software before mastering basics
  • Understand industry tools for future growth

Better software won’t fix weak fundamentals.

But strong fundamentals plus better tools can dramatically improve workflow.

Slow progress — but I’m building a strong foundation.

If you’re also learning game development, what was the first thing that confused you when you started?

See you in the next post 🎮🚀
