My First Blender Confusion After Using Unreal Engine

I thought Blender basics would be easy to pick up. But the camera controls immediately confused me.

Day 18 reminded me that switching tools takes patience.

This post is part of my daily learning journey in game development.

I’m sharing what I learn each day — the basics, the confusion, and the real progress — from the perspective of a beginner.

On Day 18 of my game development journey, I started learning Blender basics for the first time.

What I tried / learned today

I learned about the two main modes in Blender:

  • Object Mode for moving, rotating, and scaling objects
  • Edit Mode for editing vertices, edges, and faces

I also learned how to view objects from different angles using the numpad.

Front, side, and top views helped me understand the shape better.

For free camera movement, I used the middle mouse button to rotate the view.

This felt very different compared to Unreal Engine.

I also learned how to add meshes:

  • Using Shift + A
  • Choosing Mesh and selecting shapes like cube or cylinder

I explored the idea of low poly, mid poly, and high poly models.

Low poly models are commonly used for games, while high poly models are used for detailed renders and movies.

For duplication, I learned:

  • Shift + D to duplicate and move freely
  • Alt + D to create a linked duplicate.

What confused me

The biggest confusion was camera movement.

In Unreal Engine, I use right mouse button + WASD.

In Blender, the controls felt completely different and harder to control.

It didn’t feel natural at first.

What worked or finally clicked

Once I stopped comparing Blender to Unreal Engine, things improved.

Using numpad views and slowly practicing camera movement made it easier.

I understood that every tool has its own workflow.

One lesson for beginners

  • Switching tools takes time
  • Don’t expect the same controls everywhere
  • Practice camera movement early
  • Low poly models are best for games

Slow progress — but I’m building a strong foundation.

If you’re also learning game development,

what was the first thing that confused you when you started?

See you in the next post 🎮🚀
