Every AI writing tool I tried had the same problem: your text goes to a server. Grammar checking, rewriting, suggestions — all of it involves sending what you're writing to someone else's infrastructure.
I built a Firefox extension that does writing assistance locally.
What AI Writing Assistant does
Grammar checking, sentence rewriting, and writing prompts — all running inside Firefox. Your text never leaves the browser.
No cloud calls. No API key. No account. The extension processes text using a local model that runs entirely in the browser's WebAssembly environment.
Why local matters for writing
You're often writing things you wouldn't want on someone else's server: private notes, draft emails, work documents, research. AI writing tools with server-side processing are problematic for anything sensitive.
Local processing eliminates the category of problem entirely.
The tradeoff
Local models are smaller and less capable than GPT-4 or Claude. The writing help is good for grammar correction, sentence clarity, and basic rewrites — not for generating long-form content. That's the right tradeoff for a privacy-first tool.
