Every time I needed to do quick math while browsing, I'd either open a new tab and type in the address bar, or switch to my phone calculator, or open a spotlight search. All fine. All unnecessary friction.
I put the calculator on the new tab itself.
What Quick Calculator & Unit Converter does
Replaces the Firefox new tab with a calculator that also handles unit conversions. Arithmetic, percentages, plus:
- Currency (live rates)
- Length, weight, temperature, volume
- Time zone conversions
All runs locally in the extension. No API calls for basic math. Live currency rates fetch when you request them.
The case for new tab vs address bar math
The Firefox address bar does arithmetic, but only basic arithmetic. It doesn't do unit conversions. It doesn't show history. And you lose the result as soon as you start typing a URL.
A dedicated new tab calculator persists results until you close the tab.
Why not just use the OS calculator?
Alt-tabbing breaks focus. For quick calculations mid-research, staying in the browser matters.
