Alright, another day, another vaguely desperate job posting clogging my scraper. Today's victim: a "Part-Time Full-Stack Developer (Laravel and VueJS)" role at a company called "Appetiser." Let's dive in and see if this is a diamond in the rough or just another lump of coal.
The Hook
The job description starts strong with a testimonial quote from one of their own iOS developers. "Unique culture!" "Virtues created by the team!" My cynicism alarms are already blaring. Then come the leading questions: "DRIVING themselves to peak performance?" "HELPING PEOPLE create technology that impacts millions?" Sounds like they're looking for someone to drink the Kool-Aid. Their competitors "cannot keep up"? Classic hyperbole. Ambitious goal of 10x growth in 5 years? Expect long hours and impossible deadlines.
The Stack Analysis
Laravel and VueJS are a solid, modern stack. Nothing groundbreaking, but definitely marketable. Good choice from a backend perspective as it's mature. The job itself sounds like fairly standard full-stack work: building websites, collaborating with designers, coordinating with teams, planning for disaster recovery, and maintaining existing features. The inclusion of HTML and CSS feelsβ¦basic. Do they really think they need to mention that? Are they expecting someone who doesn't know HTML or CSS?
The Money
"Competitive, commensurate with experience." Translation: We'll pay you as little as we can get away with. Especially for a part-time role, and given the experience demanded below, this is a HUGE red flag. Expect to haggle, and be prepared to walk away if they lowball you. "Part time" is not mentioned in the rest of the post.
Red Flags / Green Flags
Red Flags:
- The Kool-Aid-drinking language throughout the description.
- Vague salary ("Competitive, commensurate with experience").
- High-growth ambitions with a part-time role suggestion.
- Overselling their awesomeness ("Our competitors cannot keep up!").
- Mentioning HTML and CSS as if they're a big deal.
Green Flags:
- Laravel and VueJS are decent technologies.
- Might gain varied experience across the full stack.
The Verdict
I'm leaning towards "avoid" on this one. The overly enthusiastic tone, combined with the vague salary and high expectations for a part-time role, screams of a company that's either naive or trying to take advantage of developers. Unless you're desperate for experience or really believe in their "virtues," I'd give this one a pass. The ambiguity surrounding the time expectation suggests they may just expect full-time at part-time pay.
