The $10K Gold GPU Is Real, and Yes, It's Ridiculous

Intel Finally Wins One Against Apple — Sort Of

Over in CPU land, there's a genuinely interesting data point. Hardware reviewer Jeff Geerling ran his custom HPL FP64 benchmark suite (the same method behind the Green500 supercomputer ranking) and found the Intel Core 5 320 "Wildcat Lake" posted a real compute-per-watt win over Apple's A18 Pro — the first time x86 has done that in this specific test.

Here's the raw math: the Core 5 320 hit 127.91 GFLOPS at 20.6W (6.21 GFLOPS/W), while the A18 Pro managed 57 GFLOPS at 10.6W (5.38 GFLOPS/W). On paper Intel wins the efficiency crown here. But honestly, it's the wrong benchmark for how most people actually use a laptop. The A18 Pro still leads by wide margins on GPU performance, AI throughput, and single-core speed. Intel wins real-world battery life by about an hour, which is nice, but "efficient at what" is the real question. If you're doing heavy FP64 scientific work on a thin laptop, sure, this matters. For everyone else watching video and opening 40 browser tabs, Apple still comes out ahead on the stuff you feel day to day. Interesting milestone, not a knockout.

The Laptop Fire Sale Nobody's Talking Enough About

If you're in the market for a laptop, this is genuinely the week to pay attention. A few deals dropped that I'd normally call out one by one, but together they tell a story.

GIGABYTE cut $500 off its RTX 5070-powered AERO X16 gaming laptop, dropping it to $1,499 at Walmart. That gets you a 5070, 32GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 165Hz display. That's a lot of machine for that money — the 5070 is a legitimately good mobile GPU for 1440p gaming, and 32GB of RAM means you're not upgrading for a long time. If I were buying a gaming laptop on a budget right now, this is the one I'd grab.

There's also the Alienware 15 (2026) getting reviewed as "exceptionally good performance for the price" — which is almost a contradiction in terms for a brand that usually charges the Alienware tax. It's not perfect, and the review is honest about the compromises, but the value positioning is real this year.

And over on the value side, an Acer Nitro V 16S AI with an RTX 5060, 32GB RAM and a 1TB SSD is apparently at a historical low price. I always take "historical low" with a grain of salt because these are often timed promos, but the spec-to-price ratio checks out.

Honestly, if you've been holding off on a laptop upgrade, the RTX 50-series mobile lineup finally has deals that make sense. These are the first real "just buy it" moments since the lineup launched.

RAM Is Sold Out Through 2027 — Here's the Catch

Now for the part that should actually worry you if you're building: RAM production worldwide is reportedly sold out through 2027. Suppliers have apparently committed their entire production capacity at high prices for all of next year, which means memory prices aren't coming down anytime soon. This is why DDR5 and LPDDR5X prices keep climbing — and it's why the 32GB laptops on sale this week look like smarter buys than they did six months ago.

The practical takeaway: if you're building a PC or upgrading memory, don't wait hoping prices drop. They're not going to. The deals on systems with 32GB already baked in are looking increasingly like the smart play, because buying the RAM separately later is only going to cost more.
