Been digging through hardware news the past couple days, and three things actually made me stop and read twice. None of them are the usual flagship-overpriced-flagship cycle. All three sit at the more interesting end of the spectrum — cheap, clever, or just plain weird.
Let me run through them quick.
The Steam Deck got a 31% low-frame-rate boost from a kernel patch nobody's talking about.
David Vernet at Meta proposed a Linux patch called epp_boost that changes how AMD's P-State driver handles clock speed during gaming. The problem was simple: when a game thread pauses briefly waiting on the GPU, the driver sees reduced CPU demand and drops the clock. When the thread wakes up, it starts from a lower frequency, creating a micro-stutter that shows up as bad 1% lows.
The fix monitors each core every 10ms and temporarily pushes busy cores into performance mode, reverting after 300ms of idle. In Civilization VI benchmarks, 1% lows improved by 31.8%. Frame generation times at the 99th percentile improved by 4.1%. Average FPS didn't change, which is exactly what you want — the patch doesn't make things faster on average, it just stops the stutters.
Now, it's still unreviewed and unreleased. And I do wonder about power draw on the Steam Deck's shared CPU/GPU budget. Raising clocks even temporarily on a handheld where every watt is shared is not free. But if this lands in mainline, it's a big deal for anyone running Linux on AMD handhelds — the Deck, Ayaneo, GPD, all of them.
The ASRock BC-250 build that costs less than a console.
This one came from a community post on Plug World. The BC-250 is basically a mini PC board with an AMD APU, and someone figured out you can turn it into a decent budget Steam Machine for around $150 plus some elbow grease.
The key trick: allocate 6GB of VRAM instead of the commonly recommended 512MB. Most guides tell you to keep it low, but with 6GB the dynamic allocation works better and games don't look like a PS2 upscale. The downside — it eats into system RAM, so you need to plan your workload accordingly.
The guide also recommends disabling Steam's precached shader download, undervolting and overclocking the CPU (apparently the 40CU unlock leaves thermal headroom), and for Bazzite users, disabling the HHD daemon that causes constant micro-stutter.
Honestly, this is the kind of project that makes PC gaming actually fun. Not because it's powerful — it's not — but because you can build a playable gaming machine for pocket change and learn a ton in the process.
The Agent Box — a $999 AI mini PC that claims DGX Spark performance.
This one is from Acrab, a startup backed by CATL (yes, the battery company). They're claiming their mini PC can run 100-billion-parameter models locally at a fifth of the price of NVIDIA's DGX Spark.
I'm skeptical, to be fair. A $999 box that competes with a $5,000 appliance? In AI hardware, you usually get what you pay for — memory bandwidth, interconnect, cooling. But the CATL backing is interesting. If anyone can afford to subsidize hardware for market penetration, it's the world's largest battery manufacturer.
Still, this is early. No real benchmarks, no shipping units, just announcements. Worth watching if you're in the local LLM space, but I wouldn't pre-order.
A quick note on cases — the Lian Li x DAN Cases B4-mATX.
Third collaboration between Lian Li and DAN Cases, and it's a shape-shifter. The B4 is a microATX chassis that can reconfigure internal layouts, which is rare for mATX. Most SFF enthusiasts go ITX, but mATX gives you more PCIe slots and RAM slots without going full tower.
From my perspective, the mATX form factor is underrated right now. ITX is too tight for most builds, ATX is too big for most desks. A well-designed mATX case like this sits in a sweet spot — especially if you're building a work/gaming hybrid machine.
Anyway, that's what caught my eye this week. Nothing earth-shattering, just solid, interesting hardware moves that don't require selling a kidney.
