AMD's $329 7700X3D Has a Date, DDR5 Won't Stop Climbing, and Intel's Roadmap Finally Makes Sense

You know that feeling when you check component prices and just sigh? Yeah, July isn't letting up. But behind the price hikes, there's actually a lot of movement worth tracking — a new X3D chip with a reasonable price tag, another round of AMD memory encryption drama, Intel laying out the rest of the decade, and SSD prices that keep rewriting the "maybe next month" rule.

Let me walk through what I've been reading this week.


AMD's Quietly Stacking Up a Strong Second Half

The biggest number floating around right now is $329. That's the launch price for the Ryzen 7 7700X3D, coming July 16. Eight cores, 104 MB of cache, 4.5 GHz boost — it's basically a more affordable entry point into AM5's 3D V-Cache lineup without giving up too much on the cache front. I've been running a 7800X3D in my daily build for a while, and the extra cache really shows in CPU-bound titles like Factorio and simulation games. The 7700X3D should land close to that experience for about $120 less.

A couple of things worth noting:

AM5 is getting extended support through 2029. That's a big deal if you're building now and don't want to swap motherboards every other generation. AMD's commitment here is basically matching what they did with AM4 — one of the longest-running sockets in consumer PC history.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition is already out ($349), bundled with a Carbice thermal pad. It's a nice nod to how long AM4 has lasted, but honestly, if you're on AM4 already, I'd wait for the 7700X3D unless you find a good deal on a used 5800X3D. The anniversary tax is real.

On the GPU side, the Radeon RX 9070 GRE is now available globally at $549. 48 RDNA 4 compute units, 12 GB VRAM, 2.79 GHz boost clock. AMD claims 21% faster 1440p performance than the competition at that price point. I haven't tested one myself yet, but the RDNA 4 ray tracing improvements are legit — it's no longer a "skip RT on AMD" situation. The 12 GB buffer is a bit tight for 2026 though, especially with games like Alan Wake 2 and the latest UE5 titles pushing VRAM limits.

One more thing — AMD's TSME (Transparent SME) memory encryption is coming back to Ryzen 9000 via a BIOS update this month. They removed it in the AGESA 1.2.7.0 firmware back in June, and the community pushed back hard. The company cited "valuable community feedback" and is rolling it back. Good on them for listening, but it does make you wonder about the testing process before that update shipped.


NVIDIA's RTX Spark: More Interesting Than You'd Expect

The RTX Spark Superchip is NVIDIA's play for the AI PC space — an Arm CPU + Blackwell GPU combo with 128 GB of unified memory. It's aimed at turning Windows into what NVIDIA calls an "agentic AI OS."

I'm not going to pretend this is aimed at gamers. It's not. But it does hint at where NVIDIA sees the desktop market going: local AI inference, development workstations, and thin clients that can run serious models without hitting the cloud. The unified memory pool is the standout spec here — 128 GB means you can run 70B parameter models locally. That's genuinely impressive.

Will it matter for the average PC builder? Not this year. But if you're doing AI work on the side, it's worth keeping an eye on. The Arm + Blackwell combo might also show up in unexpected places — don't be surprised if we see derivative designs in laptops or compact workstations by mid-2027.


Intel's Roadmap: Arrow Lake Refresh, Then Nova Lake

Intel finally confirmed what the rumor mill has been saying for months. Arrow Lake Refresh is coming in 2026, and Nova Lake hits later in the year on a new LGA1954 socket.

The Nova Lake desktop SKUs are rumored to scale up to 52 cores — which, if true, would be a massive jump from anything we've seen on the desktop side. The company also admitted there are "holes to fill on the desktop front," which is a refreshingly honest take from a company that usually leans hard on PR spin.

From my perspective, the Arrow Lake refresh is the safe upgrade path for existing LGA1851 users. Nova Lake is the one to watch for anyone building fresh. The socket change means you'll need a new board anyway, so waiting for Nova Lake makes more sense if you can hold off.


DDR5 and SSD Prices: The Pain Isn't Going Away

I've been tracking this closely, and the numbers are rough.

According to TrendForce, conventional DRAM contract prices jumped 90–95% quarter-over-quarter in Q1 2026, with NAND Flash rising 55–60%. Q2 is projected to add another 58–63% on DRAM and 70–75% on NAND.

The core reason is that AI infrastructure is eating the memory supply chain. HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) gets priority from manufacturers because margins are much higher. Server DRAM and enterprise SSDs come next. Consumer DDR5 and client SSDs are at the bottom of the priority list.

What does this mean practically? If you're planning a build, don't count on prices dropping in H2 2026. The structural shift is real — AI memory demand isn't a temporary spike. Enterprise customers are signing multi-year supply agreements, locking up production capacity that would've gone to consumer components in previous cycles.

On the bright side, QLC SSDs are getting more widespread deployment, and higher-layer NAND adoption could help moderate the steepest increases. But I wouldn't hold my breath for a return to 2024 pricing levels anytime soon.

So where does that leave us for July?

If you're building a gaming PC right now, the 7700X3D at $329 is the most interesting CPU launch this month. Pair it with a B650 board and DDR5 you buy now (before prices climb further), and you've got a solid platform that'll last through 2029. On the GPU side, the RX 9070 GRE is worth a look at $549 if you're playing at 1440p. The 12 GB VRAM is my only hesitation — I'd personally stretch for a 16 GB card if your budget allows.

For storage, buy what you need today. DDR5 and SSD prices are trending up, and there's no relief in sight. If you've been sitting on a 1 TB SSD thinking you'll upgrade when prices drop, that moment isn't coming this year.

And for the waiting game? Intel's Nova Lake and AMD's Zen 6 both look promising, but they're late 2026 at best. If your current rig is still running well, you can afford to wait. If it's struggling, don't torture yourself — the 7700X3D is a solid buy.
