RTX 50 Supply Is Getting Ugly, DDR5 Hit $375, and Panther Lake Is Finally Here

If you have been trying to build a PC anytime this year, I do not need to tell you — the vibes are not great. Prices are climbing, certain GPU models have basically disappeared from stores, and DDR5 that used to cost pocket change now demands rent money. I spent the past couple days digging through the latest reports to see where we actually stand mid-2026, and honestly, the picture is mixed at best. Let me walk through what is happening across the major categories.


NVIDIA's RTX 50 Series: Production Paused, Prices Spiking, No Refresh in Sight

This is the big one. Multiple sources have confirmed that NVIDIA cut GPU allocations to its board partners by around 20 percent, and in practice, that has been brutal. The RTX 5070 Ti and the 16GB variant of the RTX 5060 Ti? Basically gone from retail shelves in many regions. In the US, remaining RTX 5070 Ti stock went from around $730 to over $1,250 — a 71 percent jump. That is not a normal price fluctuation. That is a broken supply chain.

Tom's Guide reported in late June that production of nearly the entire RTX 50 series had been effectively paused. NVIDIA's official response was careful — they said they will "continue to ship all GeForce SKUs" while acknowledging memory constraints. But the reality on the ground is that if you are shopping for a mid-range Blackwell card right now, you are either paying well above MSRP or you are not finding one at all.

The root cause? GDDR7 memory. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are all prioritizing HBM for AI data centers over GDDR7 for consumer GPUs. Every wafer that goes into HBM4 stacks is one less wafer producing GDDR7 for your next graphics card. And with NVIDIA reportedly reducing GeForce production by 30-40 percent in early 2026 to reallocate scarce memory toward Blackwell AI accelerators, the consumer GPU market is getting squeezed on both ends.

A lot of people are wondering whether a SUPER refresh would fix this. From what I have seen, the credible timeline now points to CES 2027, not this year. So anyone holding out for a mid-cycle bump in availability — I would not bet on it.

One thing that caught my attention: counterfeit DDR5 sticks have started appearing in the market, built from empty plastic chips with relabeled shells. When components get this expensive and scarce, the fakes follow. If you are buying RAM right now, stick to reputable sellers.


DDR5 at $375 for 32GB — Not a Spike, a Structural Repricing

Gartner recently published a forecast that caught a lot of people off guard: they expect a combined 130 percent surge in DRAM and SSD prices by the end of 2026. And here is the kicker — they project the sub-$500 entry-level PC will effectively disappear by 2028. Memory now accounts for 35 percent of HP's PC bill of materials. A year ago that number was around 12 to 15 percent.

The cheapest 32GB DDR5 kit in the US right now sits at roughly $375. To put that in perspective — same kit sold for $80 to $120 in mid-2025. That is not a bad month for DRAM pricing. That is a structural shift driven by AI's insatiable appetite for HBM.

Framework, the company known for modular DIY laptops, raised DDR5 upgrade prices by 50 percent and warned of further increases. Micron quietly retired its consumer Crucial brand in February 2026 to focus entirely on enterprise AI customers. These moves tell you everything about where memory manufacturers see their future profits.


Intel's Panther Lake Is Shipping — But Nova Lake Is the Real Story

Intel finally shipped Panther Lake (Core Ultra Series 3) on its 18A process — the first mainstream consumer silicon built on US-based advanced manufacturing at scale. Early numbers look solid for a mobile-first architecture, especially the Xe3 Celestial iGPU which reportedly delivers around 50 percent uplift over the previous generation. The 5th-gen NPU also hits the 40+ TOPS mark, which checks the box for Microsoft's AI PC requirements.

But the more interesting story is Nova Lake. Intel confirmed a late 2026 launch for its next-gen desktop architecture, also on 18A, with a new cache design aimed squarely at AMD's X3D lineup. Whether Intel can actually deliver on time and at volume remains the open question — the company has burned credibility on execution over the past few years. But the Panther Lake launch went smoother than many expected, so maybe the turnaround is real.

On the AMD side, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 with dual 3D V-Cache CCDs (192 MB L3 total) is shaping up as the halo gaming CPU this year. The asymmetric scheduling penalty that plagued earlier dual-CCD X3D designs has apparently been addressed, which would make this chip a no-brainer for anyone building a high-end gaming rig — if you can get DDR5 at reasonable prices to pair with it.


What It All Adds Up To

If you are planning a build right now, I would say this: if you need a GPU, buy what you can find at close to MSRP and do not wait for prices to drop — they probably will not this year. If you are on an RTX 30 series or RX 6000 series, skipping this generation entirely and waiting for whatever comes after the Blackwell supply mess resolves seems like the sane move.

For RAM, the situation is worse. If you need DDR5, buy it now. Gartner's forecast suggests it only goes up from here. Do not hold out for a 32GB kit under $300 anytime soon.

Intel's Panther Lake laptops are worth a look if you care about iGPU performance and AI features in a thin-and-light form factor. But desktop builders should keep an eye on Nova Lake later this year.
