You know that moment when the GPU company suddenly decides it wants to be a CPU company too? That's what happened at Computex 2026, and the PC hardware world hasn't stopped buzzing since.

Nvidia's RTX Spark announcement was probably the loudest hardware news of the year so far. Jensen Huang walked on stage and basically said the traditional PC is dead — then introduced the chip that's supposed to replace it. The RTX Spark is a superchip: a 20-core Grace CPU (co-developed with MediaTek) paired with a Blackwell RTX GPU packing 6,144 CUDA cores. Up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5X memory. One petaFLOP of AI performance. That's not a typo.

Here's where it gets real: Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, Asus, and MSI are all confirmed to ship RTX Spark devices by holiday 2026. This isn't a reference design sitting in a lab.

The market reaction was immediate. Intel and AMD shares both slid after the announcement. Investors clearly see this as a direct threat to the x86 stronghold that's held the PC market for decades. Honestly? They're not wrong to worry.

But let's pump the brakes a little. The RTX Spark is Arm-based, which means software compatibility is the big question mark. Windows on Arm has come a long way, but running your Steam library or productivity apps on an Nvidia-powered Arm chip is still an unknown. I'll believe it when I can actually run Cyberpunk on it without jumping through emulation hoops.

Meanwhile, on the data center side, Nvidia also unveiled the Vera Rubin platform — six new chips including the Rubin GPU with 336 billion transistors on TSMC 3nm, 50 petaflops FP4 per NVL72 rack, and 288GB HBM4 per GPU. The first Vera Rubin rack is already running at Microsoft Azure. Full production ships H2 2026.

And Rubin CPX? That's purpose-built for large-context inference — 128GB GDDR7, 30 petaflops. Oh, and DLSS 4.5 dropped too. Classic Nvidia.


Memory prices: the bad news that keeps getting worse

Alright, let's talk about the elephant in the room. If you've shopped for RAM or SSDs recently, you already know — prices are brutal right now. Rock Paper Shotgun ran a piece that says it all: DDR5 is ungodly expensive, DDR4 isn't much better, and anything with high VRAM is just ridiculous.

The culprit? AI data center demand swallowing up the entire memory supply chain. Samsung expects the supply gap to worsen. SK Hynix plans to double wafer capacity by 2030. Micron's new Idaho fab comes online mid-2027. Samsung's P5 facility starts mass production in 2028.

We're looking at three more years of painful pricing. If you're building a PC right now: buy your RAM and storage early if you see a decent deal. Don't wait.


Cases and DIY

On a lighter note — Asus quietly launched the Prime AP304 ATX case with a patented slot vent design that isolates upper and lower chambers. Fresh air goes straight to the GPU. Curved tempered glass, tool-free GPU clamp, supports 420mm GPUs. The big question: price. Asus hasn't announced it.

Also worth mentioning: SilverStone launched the FLP03, a retro mATX case with a functional Turbo button. Just the kind of silly fun I can get behind.


The bigger picture

For the rest of 2026, RTX Spark rollout is the main event. For desktop builders, memory prices are the biggest headache. No quick fix, just a long wait for new fab capacity.
