Intel Scoffed at NVIDIA. That Story Is Worse Than You Think.

Patrick Gelsinger went on the All-In podcast and dropped a confession that should make every hardware nerd pause. He flat-out admitted Intel scoffed at NVIDIA's GPUs back when Intel was still the king of silicon. You know, the era when CPUs ran the show and nobody took GPU compute seriously.

"It was just gamer hardware," was basically the attitude inside Intel, according to Gelsinger.

He drew a direct line between Jensen Huang and Steve Jobs — both patiently building something the incumbents dismissed until it was too late. Jensen was quietly scaling CUDA for years while Intel was handing a hundred billion dollars back to shareholders instead of building fabs. Gelsinger said it himself: "What I wouldn't have done for another hundred billion dollars on the balance sheet."

That line hits hard. Intel hadn't built a new fab in a decade when he took over. No EUV machines. No forward investment. Just dividends.

A lot of people are wondering if Intel can ever climb back from that hole. From my perspective, the answer depends on whether they actually learned the lesson or are about to repeat it with someone else's technology.

Hygon's 128-Core / 512-Thread CPU Is Real, and It Ships Now

Meanwhile, across the Pacific, Hygon quietly launched something that reads like a spec-sheet fever dream. The C86-5G packs 128 cores, 512 threads via SMT4, 10 TFLOPs of FP64 compute, and 104 lanes of PCIe 5.0. It's already in mass production, shipping in everything from standard racks to liquid-immersion cabinets that cram 80,000 cores into a single cluster.

The accompanying DCU GPU accelerator targets NVIDIA's aging A100 with HBM memory and high-speed interconnects. Hygon also built their own NVLink equivalent and a PCIe 5.0 switch — essentially the whole data-center infrastructure stack.

Quick add-on note: I am not saying this is better than what Intel or AMD are doing right now. But it does not have to be. It just has to be good enough for Chinese data centers that are being cut off from Western supply chains. That alone shifts the competitive dynamics.

AWS Engineers Confirm: GPUs Keep Falling Off the PCIe Bus

Here is one that will resonate if you have ever run GPU workloads at scale. AWS published a field report from EKS operations, and the headline finding is uncomfortable: GPUs regularly disappear from the PCIe bus while the host machine reports healthy.

The node stays up. The kubelet keeps sending heartbeats. The CPU cores are fine. But the GPU the pod needs? Gone. Not visible. Driver hung or the PCIe link just dropped.

Standard Kubernetes node health models are blind to this. They assume the machine is either alive or dead. A GPU node that is partially broken looks perfectly healthy to the control plane, so it keeps receiving jobs that will fail the moment they try a CUDA call.

To be fair, this is not news to anyone running large GPU fleets. But seeing it documented with Amazon EKS scale data makes the scale of the problem clearer. Every hour a broken GPU stays in the schedulable pool is another failed job, another retry, another wasted cycle in a contended resource pool.
