Arm Is Having a Week. Qualcomm Isn't Done Yet — and AMD Won't Just Hand Over the Workstations
If you blinked this week, you'd have missed it, but Arm basically took over the hardware news cycle. Qualcomm dropped the Snapdragon C, a chip clearly aimed at $300 laptops. Then the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro showed up in an AnTuTu run before it's even official. And to top it off, someone modded an Android phone into a desktop that actually runs The Witcher 3. That last one is the part I keep coming back to.
To be fair, none of this is earth-shattering on paper. But together, it's a pretty loud statement about where mobile silicon is heading.
Snapdragon C: Qualcomm finally goes after the bottom of the laptop barrel
The Snapdragon C is not a flagship part, and it doesn't pretend to be. Eight Kryo cores, a 3GHz single-core ceiling, 2GHz multi-core, and 2MB of cache. Modest numbers, and Qualcomm knows it. The whole bet is that for people who just browse, write documents, and sit in video calls, you don't need 24 threads of anything.
I've used a few of these bargain-bin Arm laptops, and honestly, the appeal is real if you're not gaming. They're quiet, they sip power, and the battery just keeps going. The catch is the same one that's always there: Windows on Arm is still a compatibility lottery. If your workflow is pure web apps, fine. If you live in legacy x86 software, prepare for translation-layer roulette. Qualcomm is hoping that the $300 price tag makes people more willing to roll those dice.
The phone that thinks it's a desktop
Here's the part I genuinely enjoyed this week: a modded Android phone running The Witcher 3 as a full desktop PC. It's a stunt, sure, but it's a stunt that would've been unthinkable a few years ago. The fact that a Snapdragon-based phone can push that much around — and run an actual PC game — says more about mobile GPU progress than any spec sheet could.
And that leads into the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro leak. It's coming next month, per the AnTuTu run, and the numbers people are reading out of it are strong. I'd take benchmark leaks with a grain of salt — they're tuned environments, not real life. But the direction is obvious: Qualcomm is treating smartphone silicon like it belongs in the laptop conversation, and for better or worse, the gap keeps closing.
AMD's answer on the workstation side
While Qualcomm was busy with mobile chips, AMD quietly reminded everyone that x86 still owns the serious work. The Dell Pro Precision 5 14s is a 3.08-pound workstation with a Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 475 inside: 12 cores, 24 threads, a 60 TOPS NPU, and Radeon 890M integrated graphics. With 64GB of LPDDR5x, it's a machine that laughs at the idea of "ultraportable means underpowered."
I'll be blunt about the trade-off though. The 890M iGPU is decent, but it's not a gaming GPU. You're buying this for CPU-heavy workflows — compiling, running VMs, crunching datasets — not for playing Cyberpunk at high settings. For people who do real work on the go, that's a reasonable deal. For people hoping it doubles as a gaming laptop, it won't.
A convertible that shows the gap in one place
The Asus ProArt PZ14 review landed this week too, and it's kind of the perfect illustration of the whole Arm situation. Snapdragon X2 Elite inside, a gorgeous 144Hz OLED touchscreen, slim build, and excellent color accuracy. CPU performance? Strong, especially for how thin it is. GPU performance? Falls behind the current competition. It's the same story every Arm device tells: great everyday performance, middling graphics.
If you're doing photo work or creative tasks that lean on CPU, the PZ14 is genuinely appealing. If your workload is GPU-accelerated, it's a harder sell. There's no universal answer here, and I wish more reviews would just say that plainly instead of hedging.

The Pixel Watch 5 leak barely deserves a headline — it looks like the same watch with 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB. I'm not sure that's worth getting excited about, but if you're already in the Wear OS ecosystem, it's a harmless bump. Felt like mentioning it for completeness.
Where this is heading
I keep thinking the same thing after this week's news: the line between "phone chip" and "laptop chip" is getting blurry by the month. Qualcomm wants in at every price point, and it's no longer just talk. The Snapdragon C is the clearest signal yet that they're going after the budget laptop market that Intel and AMD have largely treated as an afterthought.
That's genuinely good for competition. It forces Intel and AMD to care about efficiency and price again, not just core counts. But if you're building a desktop or upgrading your rig, none of this changes your decision today. The serious x86 chips still win for gaming and heavy workloads. Arm's wins are in the "good enough, cheap, and long-lasting" category, and that's a real category now.
