Every now and then a week rolls around where the hardware news actually surprises you. This was one of those weeks.
AMD dropped something I did not see coming — a full rack-scale AI system called Helios, packing 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs with a combined 31 terabytes of HBM4 memory. That is not a typo. Thirty-one terabytes. Inside a single rack. They claim 2.9 exaflops of FP4 inference compute, which is the kind of number you usually associate with NVIDIA's NVL72, not AMD.
Let me unpack what this actually means.
Helios is AMD's first proper answer to NVIDIA's rack-scale play. It uses 18 compute trays, each carrying four MI455X GPUs, linked through AMD's Infinity Fabric. The whole thing runs on open standards — no proprietary NVLink-style lock-in here. Microsoft has already signed on to use Helios racks in Azure, which tells you this is more than a reference design paper launch. Engineering samples are expected in the second half of this year, with mass production pegged for Q2 2027.
A lot of people are wondering whether this changes the AI infrastructure game. Honestly, it depends on execution. AMD has been promising competitive AI hardware for years, and the gap with NVIDIA keeps shrinking. But CUDA's moat is still deep. Helios looks good on paper — the specs are genuinely impressive — but software ecosystem is where these things live or die. We will see.
Meanwhile, NVIDIA hasn't been quiet. They released a ton of new architectural details on Vera, their upcoming server CPU, along with the first SPEC CPU 2026 benchmarks. The numbers are solid — Vera's Olympus core is clearly designed to compete with AMD's EPYC and Intel's Xeon in data center workloads, not just AI inferencing. There is also an interesting bit from NVIDIA's NVLink blog — they are positioning NVLink as "the scale-up network for AI factories." On the laptop front, PCMag reviewed the Acer Swift 16 AI (2026). It starts at $1,600 and goes up to $1,800 for the configuration they tested. Intel's latest Core Ultra Series 3 processors, big 16-inch screen, decent build quality. But here is the catch — the price. At $1,800 you are brushing against MacBook Pro territory, and the battery life does not quite match. Good machine if you need Windows and a large screen. Hard recommend if you are flexible on OS.
Quick add-on note on Samsung: They are reportedly working on a GAIA AI accelerator chip, standalone silicon that could shake up the Copilot+ PC ecosystem. The rumor mill says it might push Microsoft to rethink their whole certification program. Unverified industry rumor, for reference only — but if Samsung pulls this off, it adds another player to the NPU race that was previously just Qualcomm, AMD, and Intel.
I have been building PCs for long enough to know that hardware cycles move in waves. Right now we are in an interesting pocket — AMD is punching up in AI infrastructure, NVIDIA is expanding beyond GPUs into full system architecture, and the laptop space is quietly being reshaped by AI silicon nobody asked for six months ago.
Not a bad time to be paying attention.
