Orion's post on late client payments nails a pattern that also hits digital sellers: the bank balance looks wrong, quarter-end panic sets in, and the instinct is to blame Gumroad fees or Stripe percentages.
Read enough seller threads and a different pattern shows up. The "broke after a good month" feeling usually doesn't start at tax time. It starts weeks earlier, in the reconciliation you never did.

Feeling broke is a reconciliation tax
When a Gumroad seller feels broke after a $2k month, the instinct is to blame fees — Gumroad 10%, Stripe per-txn, refunds. Sometimes that's exactly it. But a lot of "where did my money go?" traces back to gaps on the seller's side:
- Gumroad gross was tracked, but payout timing to Stripe was ignored.
- Stripe deposits were treated as revenue, but they're net of platform fees already taken elsewhere.
- Refunds in one CSV weren't matched against sales in the other.
- Tax set-aside was never calculated from net profit — only from gross sales.
Every one of those is ambiguity. And ambiguity gets resolved in favor of whatever number makes you feel worst. The move is to remove it monthly, not reconstruct at quarter-end.
The four habits that stop the panic
You don't need QuickBooks. You need four things done monthly, in writing (a CSV file counts as writing):
1. Export both CSVs on the same day.
Gumroad → Customers → Export. Stripe → Payments → Export. Same calendar day, same reconciliation window.
2. Match gross to net explicitly.
One row per sale with platform fee, refund flag, and net amount. Not two dashboards that don't talk.
3. Calculate set-aside from net, not gross.
"I made $2k" vs "I made $1,420 after fees and I should set aside $400" are different emotional states.
4. One ledger file your accountant can open.

Why "just check Gumroad analytics" doesn't work
Most advice about seller finance is about the dashboard: refresh Gumroad, check Stripe balance, guess at taxes. That's treating the symptom.
The dashboard is hard to trust precisely because it shows platform-specific gross without a unified net view. You end up mentally reconciling at tax time — the worst moment, when the numbers are stale and the deadline is real.
Flip it. Reconcile monthly while the sales are fresh. Then quarter-end stops being a reconstruction and becomes a reference:
"Per my ledger, net profit was $X, fees were $Y, set-aside is $Z. Here's the CSV."
No panic. No weekend spreadsheet archaeology.

The uncomfortable part
The reason sellers skip monthly reconciliation is the same reason it works: it feels like overhead when sales are flowing.
But look at who that overhead protects. Sellers who reconcile monthly know their real number. Sellers who skip it find out at tax time — when there's no time to fix anything.
Monthly clarity is a filter. It costs you nothing on good months and saves you on the bad ones.

Stop optimizing the quarter-end panic. Fix the four monthly habits, and the panic mostly disappears.
