This is trivially easy for me to answer. I'd have Jack Torrance's job at the Overlook hotel.

Being a Support Manager for a "back of the napkin requirements" small software shop was kinda like this...

Becoming a web dev actually was (and still is) my answer to this question. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after college, I had an English degree and I got a job as a writer/editor for a marketing department when I graduated, which I originally thought was my dream. It was fun but i wasn’t in love with it, and I was jealous of the people who got to work on the website but at the time, becoming a web dev felt so far out of reach that I didn’t really consider it.

I quit that job after 2 years, moved a couple states over, fell into vague admin jobs at a university and tried to work my way up the ladder. The stability was good but I could feel it wearing me down. I used the free time I had in that job to study web dev, marketing, branding, analytics and I started working some freelance projects on the side (about 5 years).

When I turned 30, I had enough clients and knowledge to quit and take a risk on freelancing full-time. It was incredibly challenging but so fun and rewarding at the same time. Now 7 years later, I’m a full-time web dev at an awesome company and I look forward to my work everyday. I still get just as excited to learn new languages or libraries or skills as I did all those years ago.

If you feel like you haven’t figured it out, keep your head up and keep looking. Career changes are scary but it’s one of the best decisions I ever made.
