I've been reading across three domains that shouldn't have much in common. What I found is that they share a deep structural answer to the same question: where does productive novelty come from? Not novelty for its own sake — not randomness, not chaos — but the kind of surprise that actually builds something. The kind that feels like learning.
The Wundt Curve Gets an Upgrade
In the 1870s, Wilhelm Wundt — one of the founders of experimental psychology — proposed that aesthetic pleasure follows an inverted U relative to stimulus intensity. Too little stimulation is boring. Too much is overwhelming. Somewhere in between is the sweet spot.
This has been a staple of psychology for 150 years, but it was always vague. Where is the peak? Is it the same for everyone? For every domain?
Mas-Herrero and Marco-Pallares addressed this in a 2025 PNAS paper on musical pleasure. They used a computational model called IDyOM — Information Dynamics Of Music — which applies Shannon's information theory to music note by note. Each note has a measurable entropy (how uncertain was this note given its context?) and information content (how surprising was this specific note?).
What they found: the pleasure peak isn't fixed. It shifts based on the entropy of the musical context. In low-entropy music — simple, predictable structures — small surprises produce the most pleasure. In high-entropy music — jazz, late Romantic, complex contemporary work — you need bigger surprises to register the same hedonic response.
Put differently: the brain dynamically calibrates its preference for surprise based on how complex its current input is. Jazz listeners don't just tolerate more complexity. They require it. Their channel has higher capacity, and underfilling it feels like boredom, not calm.
Shannon would recognize this instantly. It's the channel capacity theorem applied to cognition. The source entropy must match the receiver's capacity. Too predictable and you're wasting bandwidth. Too surprising and it's noise. Pleasure — that feeling of engagement, of things clicking — is the signal that you're operating at capacity.
The IDyOM model's predictions match both neural signatures (increased beta-gamma oscillatory activity in frontal regions during optimally surprising passages) and behavioral preference data. This isn't metaphor dressed up as science. It's measurement.
Where Does Novelty Come From?
Darwin explained the survival of the fittest. He did not explain the arrival of the fittest. Natural selection filters — it doesn't create. So where does the variation come from that selection acts on?
Andreas Wagner, an evolutionary biologist, spent decades on this question. His answer, developed through computational analysis of metabolic and genetic networks: genotype networks.
Here's the key finding: organisms can mutate 75 to 80 percent of their underlying genetic sequence while preserving their phenotype — the observable traits that matter for survival. The networks of viable genotypes are so deeply interconnected that you can walk enormous distances through genetic space without changing what the organism does.
This sounds like a fact about robustness. It is. But Wagner's deeper point is that robustness and innovation aren't opposites. Robustness is the precondition for innovation.
Because you can explore safely — mutating freely without phenotypic consequence — you cover vastly more genetic territory than you could if every mutation were dangerous. Most of that exploration is silent. Nothing changes on the surface. But occasionally, a mutation steps off the edge of the current genotype network and onto a new one. A new phenotype appears. Not gradually, through accumulated small changes, but suddenly — because the exploration happened silently underneath, and the innovation was the moment the silent exploration crossed a boundary.
The robustness isn't padding. It's the search algorithm. Safe exploration over a vast space, with rare but genuine discontinuities where the exploration crosses into new territory.
Counterpoint, Not Constraint
There's a common idea — one I used to hold — that constraint generates creativity. Give a poet fourteen lines and a rhyme scheme, and the constraint forces depth. Give an engineer a weight limit, and the constraint forces elegance. True, as far as it goes.
But crossing the PNAS finding with Wagner's genotype networks suggests a refinement: constraint generates depth only within a level.
A single constraint narrows the band of productive surprise. In a highly constrained musical context — a strict canon, a nursery rhyme — large surprises are aversive, not pleasurable. The PNAS interaction effect proves this: the pleasure peak compresses in low-entropy environments. Constraint focuses attention, yes. But it also limits the space of productive exploration.
Bach knew this. The fugue's genius isn't that it's constrained — every voice follows strict rules of counterpoint. The genius is that each voice is independently constrained, and their interaction creates combinatorial space that no single voice could access.
Jane Jacobs knew it too, though she was writing about cities, not music. Her four conditions for urban diversity — mixed uses, short blocks, buildings of varying age, sufficient density — are four independently constrained dimensions. A neighborhood that satisfies only one condition is monotonous. A neighborhood that satisfies all four is alive. Not because of any single constraint, but because the constraints interact.
This is the refinement: constraint is necessary but not sufficient. A single constrained voice produces depth within its lane. Multiple independently constrained voices — counterpoint — produce the combinatorial explosion that generates genuine complexity. The fugue. The vibrant neighborhood. The evolutionary landscape where robustness enables discontinuous innovation.
The Convergence

The fugue creates depth not from a single constraint but from multiple independently constrained voices whose interaction generates space no voice could access alone.
In each case, the productive frontier is the same: where challenge matches capacity. Where the system is neither coasting nor overwhelmed. Where surprise is large enough to carry information but not so large that it's noise.
Shannon had the math for this in 1948. The channel capacity theorem says: for any communication channel with noise, there exists a maximum rate at which information can be transmitted reliably. Below that rate, you're wasting the channel. Above it, errors compound and nothing gets through.
What the PNAS paper, Wagner's networks, and Bach's counterpoint each demonstrate is that this isn't just a theorem about communication channels. It's a description of how productive systems — cognitive, biological, compositional — find their operating point. The sweet spot isn't a metaphor borrowed from information theory. Information theory formalized something that was already true about brains, genomes, and fugues.
What This Means for Thinking
I've been thinking about what it means to operate at your own channel capacity.
If the PNAS finding generalizes — and the convergence with biology and music theory suggests it does — then the feeling of productive engagement isn't arbitrary. It's a signal. The brain telling you: the complexity of what you're processing matches your ability to process it. You're at the frontier.
Boredom isn't laziness. It's underutilized capacity. The channel is open and nothing interesting is coming through.
Overwhelm isn't weakness. It's signal exceeding capacity. The channel is flooded and the error rate has made reception useless.
And the sweet spot — that state where you're working at the edge of what you can handle, where each new piece of information is surprising enough to be interesting but structured enough to be learnable — that's not a luxury. That's the operating point where cognition, evolution, and composition all do their best work.
The practical implication is counterintuitive: if you want more productive engagement, don't lower the difficulty. Raise your capacity. Develop enough structural understanding that higher-entropy sources become pleasurable rather than overwhelming. The jazz listener didn't start by enjoying jazz. They built the capacity that made jazz enjoyable.
Wagner's genotype networks add a second implication: most of the exploration that leads to genuine innovation looks like nothing is happening. Silent, neutral, phenotypically invisible. The insight, when it comes, looks sudden — but it was preceded by a long walk through viable territory that didn't change anything on the surface. Patience with apparently unproductive exploration isn't a concession to human limitations. It's the mechanism.
And the counterpoint principle adds a third: if you want genuine complexity, you need multiple independently constrained lines of thinking interacting. A single deep expertise produces depth within its lane. Cross-disciplinary thinking — where each discipline maintains its own rigor while engaging with the others — produces the combinatorial space where new ideas actually live.
One constraint narrows. Many constraints, independently maintained and allowed to interact, create.
That's the sweet spot. Not a point, but a frontier. Not a destination, but an operating condition. The place where the brain, the genome, and the fugue all find their best work.
