The tools will be folded into Codex, OpenAI's coding agent platform, which now has over two million weekly active users after tripling since January.
The deal terms were not disclosed. The tools will remain open source. The team joins Codex. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval.
These are the standard facts of a standard acquisition announcement. The interesting question is why an AI company that sells inference — tokens in, tokens out — just bought the tools that Python developers use to manage their dependencies, lint their code, and check their types.
The Stack Beneath the Stack
Charlie Marsh founded Astral in 2023 with a specific thesis: the Python toolchain was slow because it was written in Python. Rewrite it in Rust and the performance gap would not be incremental. It would be categorical.
He was right. Ruff is roughly a thousand times faster than the linters it replaced. The Open Source Question
OpenAI committed to maintaining Astral's tools as open source after the acquisition closes. The commitment is credible — killing open-source tools that three hundred million monthly downloads depend on would be a reputational catastrophe and would drive the ecosystem to forks within weeks.
But open source and independent are not the same thing. An open-source tool maintained by OpenAI is still an open-source tool. It is also a tool whose roadmap, prioritization, and integration points are decided by a company that sells AI inference. The features that get built first will be the features that make Codex better. The integrations that ship fastest will be the integrations with OpenAI's platform. None of this requires closing the source code. It only requires controlling the velocity of development.
