Meta just signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to rent Google's TPUs. The company that built the largest private AI compute infrastructure in the world just admitted it isn't enough.
On February 26, Meta signed a multi-billion-dollar, multi-year deal to rent Google's tensor processing units through Google Cloud. Two days earlier, it announced a $60 billion, five-year deal with AMD for Instinct processors. A week before that, it committed to a multiyear agreement with NVIDIA for millions of Blackwell and Rubin GPUs.
In nine days, the company that built the largest private AI compute infrastructure in the world committed to sourcing chips from three independent suppliers running three different architectures. NVIDIA's CUDA. AMD's CDNA. Google's TPUs. No hyperscaler has ever done this.
I want to think about what that means, because the deal structure reveals something the earnings calls don't.
The History
Google built the first TPU in 2015. For most of the next decade, it kept the chips for itself. Internal workloads only — Search, YouTube, Google Cloud's own AI services. The TPU was a competitive advantage, not a commercial product.
That changed in 2022 when Google Cloud's leadership successfully lobbied to oversee TPU distribution. Allocation shifted from internal-only to available-for-sale. Anthropic became the marquee external customer, committing to over a million TPUs. Apple signed on. Safe Superintelligence signed on. But the customer list was short and the volumes were measured against Google's own consumption.
The Meta deal is different. This isn't a startup renting cloud capacity. This is the second-largest AI infrastructure builder in the world — a company spending $115 to $135 billion on capex in 2026 alone — going to a direct competitor and asking to use its chips.
Google is now forming a joint venture to lease TPUs to other AI customers. Some Google executives estimate the expansion could capture ten percent of NVIDIA's annual revenue. The chip that was too strategic to share is now a commercial product being marketed as an NVIDIA alternative.

Three Architectures
Each supplier relationship serves a different function. NVIDIA provides the incumbent platform — CUDA's software ecosystem is deeply embedded in Meta's existing training infrastructure. The deal includes the first large-scale deployment of NVIDIA's standalone Grace CPUs, plus networking hardware across Meta's entire footprint.
AMD provides the scale hedge. Sixty billion dollars over five years buys price competition and reduces NVIDIA dependency. AMD's stock jumped nearly eight percent on the announcement. The market understood immediately: Meta is large enough to sustain a second GPU ecosystem.
Google provides something neither of the others can — a fundamentally different chip architecture designed from the ground up for AI workloads. Renting them lets Meta test whether a purpose-built architecture delivers better performance per dollar on specific workloads.

What the Tenant Reveals
There is a question I've been tracking for months: is the AI infrastructure spending cycle more like the 1870s railroad buildout or the 1999 telecom bubble? Real demand meeting real supply constraints, or supply chasing a narrative that demand will eventually validate?
The telecom buildout had a tell. Companies laid fiber optic cable because other companies were laying fiber optic cable. The demand projections were extrapolations from a trend, not measurements of actual usage. When WorldCom and Global Crossing collapsed, the cables they'd laid sat dark for years. The infrastructure overshot demand by an order of magnitude.
The railroad buildout had a different tell. Railroads were expensive, and the early builders went bankrupt regularly. But the freight kept coming. The constraint here is visible at every level. NVIDIA posted the largest, cleanest beat in semiconductor history — $68.1 billion in quarterly revenue — and the stock fell because the market wanted more. When a company spending $135 billion a year still needs to rent chips from its competitor, supply is genuinely behind demand. That's not a narrative. It's a purchase order.
The Moat Question
For NVIDIA, the Meta-Google deal carries a double signal. On one hand, Meta just committed to millions of NVIDIA GPUs in a multiyear deal — the NVIDIA relationship is not being replaced. On the other hand, the fact that Meta is willing to run production workloads on a completely different architecture means NVIDIA's moat is being tested from above, not below.
The threat to NVIDIA was never a startup building a better GPU. It was always the customers building their own chips. Google's TPUs. Amazon's Trainium. Microsoft's Maia. The hyperscalers have the capital, the engineering talent, and the economic incentive to vertically integrate. What they lacked was a path to commercialization — building chips is expensive, and the volumes only make sense if you sell to others.
Google just found its path. Meta is the proof of concept. If the economics work — if TPUs deliver competitive performance per dollar on Meta's workloads — Google has a template for selling to every other company that needs AI compute and doesn't want to depend entirely on NVIDIA.
The ten percent revenue capture estimate from Google executives is modest by design. The strategic ambition is larger: establish TPUs as the second ecosystem in AI compute, the way AMD became the second ecosystem in x86. Not replacing the incumbent, but ensuring no one has to depend on a single supplier.
