Two billion each to CoreWeave, Nebius, Coherent, Lumentum, and Marvell. Two point one billion to IREN. One billion to Nokia. Up to three point two billion to Corning. At least fifteen companies in total, spanning every layer from frontier models to the glass that carries their data.

This is not a venture fund. It is a customer acquisition machine.

The Mechanism

Each investment comes bundled with chip supply agreements and architecture commitments. Nvidia does not write a check and wait for returns. It writes a check and locks in chip orders.

The leverage ratio is asymmetric. Every dollar of equity investment generates an estimated five to twelve dollars in contracted chip revenue. The lock-in comes from CUDA, Nvidia's proprietary software layer. An AI company that builds on CUDA does not merely prefer Nvidia hardware. It cannot leave without rewriting its entire codebase. The switching cost is architectural, not financial.

Nvidia reported $215.9 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2026, up sixty-five percent from the prior year. Data center revenue accounted for $193.7 billion of that total. Free cash flow reached $96.6 billion. The company generates enough cash to finance its own demand while returning capital to shareholders.

What Intel and SoftBank Couldn't Do

Corporate equity investment at this scale has been tried before. Neither attempt worked.

Intel Capital deployed more than twenty billion dollars over thirty years. It financed companies across the semiconductor value chain, created substantial value, and lost anyway. When AMD offered competitive architecture, Intel's portfolio companies switched without friction. The investments bought relationships, but relationships without switching costs are courtesy, not commitment.

SoftBank's first Vision Fund committed a hundred billion dollars. It had more capital than Nvidia. It generated mediocre returns. The fund had no technology moat. Portfolio companies owed nothing beyond standard equity terms. Capital alone could not create dependency.

Nvidia has what neither had. CUDA switching costs are structural. They require rewriting millions of lines of code, retraining engineering teams, and rebuilding optimization pipelines. This converts a financial relationship into an architectural one. The investment buys the customer. The software keeps them.

The Captive Stack

Map the portfolio against the AI infrastructure stack and the pattern becomes clear.

At the top sits OpenAI, the largest consumer of AI compute on earth. In the middle sit the neoclouds, companies like CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN that build GPU-dense data centers exclusively for AI workloads, running Nvidia hardware by design. Below them: Coherent, Lumentum, Nokia, and Marvell, building the optical interconnects between GPU clusters. At the base: Corning, manufacturing the fiber.

These companies are not independent businesses making vendor choices. They are nodes in Nvidia's distribution network, capitalized by Nvidia, running Nvidia's software stack, locked into Nvidia's hardware roadmap. The neoclouds that receive Nvidia equity also receive chip allocation priority. In an environment where GPU supply is the binding constraint, being in the portfolio means getting chips before competitors who are merely customers.

The Risk and the Test

The Department of Justice has an active antitrust investigation into Nvidia. The central question is whether bundling equity investments with supply agreements constitutes anticompetitive tying. History suggests enforcement arrives slowly. Microsoft, Intel, and Qualcomm all survived antitrust actions with their market positions largely intact. The market structure tends to calcify before the remedy takes effect.

The competitive test is more immediate. If AMD and custom silicon capture more than twenty-five percent of AI training compute by the end of 2027, the CUDA moat is eroding. Current estimates put that share between fifteen and thirty percent, depending on the source and definition. The range itself reveals genuine uncertainty about whether architectural lock-in holds against determined, well-capitalized alternatives.

The winners are Nvidia-backed neoclouds that receive both capital and chip priority. The losers are independent AI infrastructure companies competing for the same enterprise workloads without equity backing, and AMD's partners who lack an equivalent financing mechanism. AMD makes competitive hardware. It does not finance the companies that would build on it.

Nvidia is not betting on AI. It is engineering the dependency structure that ensures its chips remain the substrate, regardless of which models or applications ultimately win. The forty-billion-dollar portfolio is not an investment thesis. It is a lock-in thesis with a forty-billion-dollar budget.
