RTX Spark Is Already Sold Out, and OpenAI Just Bought Tens of Thousands of Macs

If you blinked this weekend you missed the real news: compute machines are being snatched up faster than the industry can stamp them out. NVIDIA's first RTX Spark systems are gone before most people even knew the name, OpenAI quietly grabbed tens of thousands of Mac minis, and DRAM prices are doing things that make the 2021 GPU shortage look tame. Let me unpack all of it, because a couple of these bits genuinely surprised me.

NVIDIA's RTX Spark flew off the shelves before launch

The biggest hardware story of the week isn't a benchmark or a leak — it's that NVIDIA can't keep up with demand for its own new machine. According to Taiwan's Economic Daily, the first batch of RTX Spark (N1x) superchips is already sold out, with Asus, MSI, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft all gobbling up whatever they could and reportedly asking for more. That's before the thing even ships to consumers this fall.

For anyone who hasn't been following, RTX Spark is NVIDIA's shot at the on-device AI crown, co-designed with MediaTek on TSMC 3nm. The N1x packs a 20-core Grace CPU alongside a Blackwell RTX 5070 GPU with 6,144 CUDA cores, up to 128GB of LPDDR5X unified memory, and about 600 GB/s of NVLink-C2C bandwidth between the two. Street talk puts N1x systems around NT$110,000, or roughly $3,400. (Unverified industry rumor, for reference only — but the sellout reports come straight out of the Taiwanese supply chain, so I'd treat them seriously.)

To be fair, this isn't purely a consumer product yet. The vendors buying the first wave are building machines they intend to sell, but the AI labs are the ones with the deep pockets right now. That's the real fight here: NVIDIA drawing a line in the sand against Apple Silicon for local AI, and the AI giants are the ones swinging first.

DLSS 5 leaked, and Ampere owners are finding out the hard way

On the software side, the modding scene has been busy. DLSS 5 leaked through an early-access build of NBA 2K27 last week, and the RenoDX Discord crew wasted no time patching it into every game they could reach. Someone even pushed it onto RTX 30-series "Ampere" cards.

And the results? Honestly, they fall apart. The frame-rate gains are thin and the artifacts creep back in on older hardware that wasn't built for the new tensor-core tricks. It's a fun proof of concept, and I love seeing what the community digs out of a leak, but if you're sitting on a 3060 or 3070, don't go chasing this. (Unverified industry rumor, for reference only — this is modder territory, not an official rollout.) The real DLSS 5 will come with drivers and games that are actually built around it.

Budget laptops just got a rare early drop

Lenovo quietly started selling its LOQ Essential 15IRH11 in Europe about a month ahead of schedule, and — rare for 2026 — it's coming in cheaper than expected. The base unit (Intel Core 5 205H, RTX 3050 4GB, 8GB DDR5-5200, 512GB, 165Hz 15.3" 1920x1200) is running at £1,050 or €1,159-1,209, undercutting the €1,299 MSRP Lenovo had floated.

The catch? A single cooling fan. That 45W Intel chip plus an RTX 3050 in a thin chassis with one fan is a recipe for fan noise under load. Upgradeable RAM and dual SSDs are nice touches, and you can spec it to 16GB + 1TB for a bit more. If you're a student on a budget it's a solid value — just keep an eye on thermals if you actually plan to game on it.

Over on the thin-and-light side, Asus refreshed the Vivobook 15 with Intel's Wildcat Lake chips, undercutting the 15-inch MacBook Air M5 while throwing in more ports and a numpad. And the Zenbook A16 (reviewed at $1,699.99) is a genuinely gorgeous featherweight OLED — but at that price it's a luxury purchase, not a sensible one.

The memory crunch is the whole story now

Here's the part that actually worries me for anyone building this year. The Register reports that cloud operators could be forced to spend up to 68% of their entire capex on DRAM and NAND by next year as contract prices keep climbing. When hyperscalers are rationing that hard, retail buyers feel it last and feel it worst.

Samsung's 990 EVO Plus is one of the rare bright spots: 1TB at $199.99 (13% off) and 2TB at $339.99 (36% off) on Amazon right now. Those are HMB-based Gen 4 drives hitting up to 7,150MB/s reads with a 600TBW endurance rating — no DRAM cache, but the HMB trick keeps sustained transfers from tanking. If you've been sitting on a storage upgrade, that 2TB price is about as good as it's going to get for a while.

The Micron/Crucial saga is the dark mirror of that. A customer with a dead 4TB Crucial X9 was initially offered a $200 refund — a drive that now sells for over $500 — and only got a replacement after pushing back hard. Micron's exit from the consumer market earlier this year left a lot of RMA orphans, and this is what that looks like in practice.

Apple M6 and the 2nm question

One more thing I want to flag from last week that's easy to brush past: Apple's M6 is shaping up to be the first 2nm chip, validating TSMC's newest process. But as Wccftech pointed out, the M6's real value is more bragging rights than commercial firepower right now — the A20 Pro launch is the one that actually carries weight for Apple's books. New process nodes always start out as a flex before they become a volume play. Patience there.

Closing thoughts

The through-line this week is scarcity: memory is getting squeezed, AI compute is getting hoarded, and good deals are getting rarer. If you're planning a build or an upgrade, the window on sensible prices is narrow — I'd grab the storage deals while they exist and wait out the GPU price madness.
