How to plan a Dovedale elopement: permits, parking, the best photo spots, the weather plan, and what couples actually do after the ceremony. From a Derbyshire wedding photographer.
Dovedale is the most-photographed valley in the Peak District, and the most-photographed elopement location in the East Midlands. We have shot elopements here enough times to know the right car park, the right time of day, the wet-weather backup, and the small things that turn a stressful Dovedale elopement into a relaxed one. Here is the complete guide.

Why Dovedale — and why not, for some couples
Dovedale is iconic: the stepping stones, the limestone gorge, Thorpe Cloud, the wooded valley. It is also genuinely busy on summer Saturdays, and the parking is small. If you want a quiet, uncrowded ceremony, Dovedale is not the answer. If you want a recognisably Peak District elopement with a cinematic gallery, it is.

Practical: the car parks
There are two car parks: the main Dovedale car park on the south side (closes at dusk; very limited in summer weekends) and the smaller one at the north end (quieter, easier). Arrive 60 minutes before your ceremony if you want a stress-free walk in. Both car parks are National Trust, so bring your membership or be ready to pay.

The best photo spots — and how to time them
The stepping stones are the headline. For the rest: the bend in the river below Thorpe Cloud (best light 1-2 hours before sunset), the limestone crag on the north side (less crowded, equally photogenic), and the open meadow above the valley (where the light is most-photographable in the late afternoon). The trees in the valley itself make midday portraits difficult.
The wet-weather plan
Dovedale is a gorge. In heavy rain the stepping stones are impassable. The valley floods. If your wedding is between November and April, plan a backup indoor location (the nearest is the Izaak Walton Hotel, which has a small ceremony licence). For May-October weddings, the rain is usually short and the valley re-opens.
After the ceremony: where to eat, where to stay
The Izaak Walton is the closest hotel. The Charles Cotton Hotel is the same family. The Manifold Inn is 15 minutes away. For a real meal after, head to Bakewell (20 minutes) or Ashbourne (15 minutes). If you are staying two nights, book a Peak District cottage — search 'Dovedale cottage' on Airbnb or Sykes; there are 30+ within 5 miles.
