A practical 2026 guide to reading wedding photographer reviews, finding the genuinely good ones, and avoiding the marketing-fluff 5-star reviews.
Wedding photographer reviews are weird. Every photographer has 47 five-star reviews. The reviews say the same things ('amazing', 'made us feel so comfortable', 'the photos are beautiful'). None of this tells you whether the photographer is right for you. Here is how to actually read a Derbyshire wedding photographer's review section.

Why five-star reviews are nearly useless
Most couples leaving a review are reviewing their experience, not the photos. The experience of working with a photographer is almost always positive — they are friendly, calm, and well-organised. The photos are what you are paying for, and the photos are a separate question. A 5-star review says nothing about the final gallery.

What to actually look for in a review
Three things: (1) did the couple describe a specific moment that the photographer handled well? (2) did the couple mention how many final images they got, and how long it took to receive them? (3) did the couple mention any friction, and how the photographer handled it? Real reviews have all three. Marketing reviews have none.

The platforms that matter
Google reviews (most useful for local-SEO signal and for the reviewer's history), Hitched reviews (used by real UK couples, harder to fake), Bridebook reviews (newer but increasingly honest), and TrustATrust / TrustATrader (used by some East Midlands photographers, mixed quality). Instagram and TikTok comments are not reviews — they are vanity metrics.
The 'red flag' review patterns
Reviews that are all 5 stars with no detail. Reviews that are all short sentences. Reviews that are all from the same time period (e.g., 10 reviews in 2 weeks). Reviews that are all written in the same tone. Reviews that focus on the photographer's personality more than the photos.
How to ask a photographer about their reviews
Three questions: (1) can I see a full gallery from a recent wedding? (2) can I speak to a couple whose wedding you shot in the last 6 months? (3) what is your policy if I am unhappy with the final gallery? Good photographers will say yes to all three without hesitation.
