Wedding photographer second shooter: what they do, when you need one, and how much they cost. A 2026 guide from a Derbyshire wedding photographer.

A second wedding photographer is one of the most-photographed-and-most-misunderstood add-ons in the industry. Here is the honest case for when you need one, when you don't, and how much they cost in 2026.

What a second shooter actually does

A second wedding photographer is a second professional photographer who shoots alongside the lead. They cover angles the lead can't be in two places at once: groom prep while the lead is at bride prep; the wide shot while the lead is on the close-up; the ceremony from the back while the lead is at the front. They are not an apprentice — a good second shooter is a fully qualified photographer in their own right.

When you need a second shooter

Three cases: (1) guest count over 120 (the lead cannot be everywhere), (2) the wedding is at two locations (church + reception, or two ceremonies), (3) the lead and the couple want the coverage that two shooters provide. For smaller weddings, the lead can do it alone.

When you don't need a second shooter

Five cases: (1) under 80 guests, (2) single-venue wedding, (3) tight budget, (4) intimate ceremony with no simultaneous events, (5) the lead photographer is exceptional and brings great kit. A single great photographer is usually better than a lead-plus-junior combination.

What it costs in 2026

Second shooter in Derbyshire in 2026: £400-600 for a full day, £250-400 for a half day. The lead photographer pays the second shooter and adds a margin; you pay the lead. Always ask the lead who the second shooter is — if it's a random freelancer, look elsewhere.

How to find a good second shooter

Three places: (1) ask the lead photographer who they work with regularly, (2) check Hitched and Bridebook for second shooter listings, (3) ask other local photographers who they recommend. The lead-second shooter relationship is professional; the second shooter should be able to shoot at the lead's standard.
