What 'moody' wedding photography actually means, how to get the look, and how to find a Derbyshire wedding photographer who shoots it well. A 2026 style guide.

Moody wedding photography has been the most-requested aesthetic for the last 5 years, and 2026 is no different. The look is editorial, low-key, often dark in the shadows, and almost always shot on a 35mm or 50mm prime. But 'moody' is also the most-misused term in wedding photography — here is what it actually means and how to get it.

What moody wedding photography actually is

Moody wedding photography is a post-processing style that prioritises: deep shadows, muted colour, film-like contrast, and a slightly under-exposed feel. It is the opposite of the bright, airy, pastel look that dominated the 2010s. The look is inspired by film (Kodak Portra 400, Fuji 400H) and by editorial fashion photography.

What moody wedding photography is NOT

It is not 'badly lit'. It is not 'dark and underexposed'. It is not 'lazy editing'. A good moody edit is technically more demanding than a bright edit — every shadow must be intentional, every highlight must be controlled, and the overall exposure must be balanced so the subject is visible while the mood is preserved.

How to plan a moody wedding photo day

Three things: (1) venue — historic, dark-walled, or wooded venues are ideal, (2) light — overcast or indoor-light days are best; harsh midday sun is the enemy, (3) wardrobe — deep colours (forest green, burgundy, navy, black) work; pastels and white do not.

How to find a Derbyshire moody wedding photographer

Look at full galleries, not just the homepage. A moody photographer will have a consistent look across all their work. Ask to see an unedited gallery from a real wedding. If the RAW images are bright and the final images are moody, the editing is consistent. If the RAW images are dark and underexposed, the editing is masking technical errors.

What moody editing costs

Moody editing is more time-intensive per image, so moody photographers often deliver fewer final images (250-400 instead of 500-700) or charge 10-20% more. The trade-off is worth it for couples who value the aesthetic.
