Practical, photo-led advice on what to wear for a Peak District elopement — from a Derbyshire wedding photographer who has shot 100+ of them.

Couples planning a Peak District elopement ask us one question more than any other: what should we wear? The answer is not 'whatever you want' — it is 'with these constraints'. Here is the practical, photo-led guide, written from the perspective of a photographer who has shot 100+ Peak District elopements.

The three constraints that drive every decision

Three things: (1) the location (a 5-mile hike requires different shoes than a 200m walk from a car park), (2) the season (a snowy February needs more layers than a July afternoon), (3) the photo style you want (flowy dresses photograph differently than tailored suits).

Shoes — the most important decision

Wear shoes you can actually walk in. Vow-renewal-worthy heels look great in 20% of your photos and ruin 80% of them because you cannot walk naturally. For most Peak District elopements, we recommend: flat leather boots for the ceremony, trainers for the walk, and a backup pair of heels in the car for the single portrait shot where the heels matter.

Dress — the second most important

Three styles work best: (1) flowy / chiffon — photographs beautifully in any wind, (2) fitted / slip — elegant, looks good against the gritstone, (3) boho / lace — works for the barn-venue elopements. Avoid: very long trains (they collect mud), very dark colours (you disappear against the dark gritstone), very bright whites (the eye goes to the dress, not your face).

Suit — for the groom

Tweed is the Peak District's natural fabric and photographs beautifully. For an outdoor elopement, a three-piece tweed is the most-photographed option. For a Peak District elopement at a venue, a navy or charcoal suit works. Avoid: a full morning suit (too formal for most elopements), a tuxedo (does not match the location), and very light colours (you disappear in snow).

Layers and weather

Bring a coat, hat, gloves, and a warm scarf even in summer. Peak District weather is genuinely unpredictable. A good coat, a hat, and gloves in photos looks intentional and stylish; shivering in a strapless dress looks uncomfortable. We always carry a clear umbrella in our kit, but a wool blanket in a car is the most-photographed accessory of all.
