Where to take the best wedding photos at Elvaston Castle, Derby — the Gothic hall, the woodland, the walled garden — and how to plan the timing around the venue's rules.
Elvaston Castle is one of the most dramatic wedding venues in the East Midlands — and one of the most-restrictive for photography. We have shot here enough times to know every corner and every rule. Here is the practical guide for couples considering Elvaston Castle for a 2026 wedding.

Three locations, three completely different looks
Elvaston Castle's wedding licence covers the Gothic Hall (ceremony, intimate, moody), the Walled Garden (summer ceremonies, light, full of colour), and the wider parkland (portraits, golden hour). Each gives a very different set of images — book a venue tour and walk the route in advance.

Light — and the tree that changes everything
The big cedar in the centre of the Walled Garden is a wind-break, a photo location, and a light filter. In summer it creates beautiful dappled light for portraits. In winter it blocks the low sun. The Gothic Hall has no natural light — it is best for evening and winter ceremonies, when its moodiness is a feature, not a bug.

Rules you need to know before you book
Elvaston Castle is a Derbyshire County Council property. There are supplier restrictions, time restrictions, and limited weekend availability. We send a venue-specific brief to every couple who books us for an Elvaston Castle wedding — including the supplier list, the contact for the venue coordinator, and the exact photography-permitted zones.
Weather and the right backup plan
Elvaston Castle's open-air zones are genuinely beautiful in good weather and unworkable in bad. The Gothic Hall is the wet-weather backup for ceremonies up to about 70 guests. The walled garden has covered sections. Plan for the worst-case weather from day one and you'll be relaxed when it (inevitably) rains.
