10 wedding day tips from a Derbyshire wedding photographer — the small things that make a big difference on the day.

I have shot 200+ weddings in Derbyshire. These are the 10 tips I give every couple before the day. They are not the big things (the venue, the dress, the food). They are the small things — the small things that make a big difference.

1. Eat breakfast

You will not eat properly for the rest of the day. Eat a real breakfast, with protein, in the morning. Bring snacks. The photographer will remind you to eat. Listen to the photographer.

2. Hydrate

Same reason. Drink water all day. The photographer will remind you. Listen to the photographer.

3. Read the timeline once, the morning of

Not the night before (you will forget). The morning of, with coffee. The timeline is the plan. You don't need to know every minute; you need to know what's next.

4. Trust the people you hired

You hired a photographer because you trust their eye. You hired a venue because you trust their team. You hired a florist, a caterer, a band. Trust them. The day goes wrong when couples stop trusting the people they hired and start managing.

5. Be present

The only rule. You are marrying the person you love. Your family and friends are there. The venue is beautiful. The food is good. Be there for it. The photographer is capturing it.

6. The first 10 minutes of the ceremony are the most-photographed

You will not remember them. The photographer will. Trust the photographer.

7. Speeches should be short

Best man, father of the bride, groom: 5-7 minutes each. Anything over 10 minutes loses the room. The most-photographed speeches are the short ones.

8. Have a wet-weather plan you actually like

If your wet-weather plan is a hotel function room, you don't have a wet-weather plan. Have a wet-weather plan that is genuinely good — a different venue, a marquee, an indoor space you actually like. The photographer will thank you. The guests will thank you.

9. Do a 30-minute couple-only portrait session

The most-photographed 30 minutes of the day. 30 minutes, just the two of you, with the photographer. The location matters less than the moment.

10. End on a high

Don't extend the day. Don't add a 'casual after-party'. The most-photographed weddings end on a high, not a low. The first dance is the high. After that, the night is yours.
