Thorpe Cloud elopement weddings in the Peak District: how to plan one, when to go, what to wear, and the best photo spots. From a Derbyshire wedding photographer.
Thorpe Cloud is the iconic conical hill at the southern end of Dovedale. It is the most-photographed single landmark in the Peak District and one of the most popular elopement locations in the East Midlands. Here is how to plan a Thorpe Cloud elopement, including the timing, the car park, the best photo spots, and the wet-weather backup.

Why Thorpe Cloud — and why not, for some couples
Thorpe Cloud is the kind of location that photographs exactly as it looks in your head: a conical hill rising from a green valley, with a path that winds up to the summit. The 360° view from the top is the most-photographed shot in the East Midlands. It is also genuinely busy on summer weekends, and the walk up is steeper than it looks.

Practical: the walk up
The walk to the summit of Thorpe Cloud is 1.5 miles, gaining about 150m. It is doable in trainers, but sturdy boots are better in winter or after rain. Most couples allow 45 minutes for the walk up and 30 minutes down. The last 200m to the summit is steep and rocky.

When to go
May to September is the most-photographed window, with sunrise and sunset the best times. Avoid Bank Holiday weekends (the car park fills by 9am). A weekday in June or September is the sweet spot: quiet, mild, and the light is good. Winter Thorpe Cloud is genuinely magical but cold; bring a flask.
The wet-weather plan
Dovedale floods easily. The path up Thorpe Cloud is muddy in rain and slippery in winter. If the forecast is bad, three options: (1) reschedule, (2) do a shorter session on the valley floor, (3) use a wet-weather backup venue (the Izaak Walton Hotel is the closest, 5 minutes away).
What it costs
Thorpe Cloud elopements in 2026: £1,000–£2,000 for photography (2-3 hours, 100+ edited images), £200–£500 for a celebrant, £0 for a National Trust car park if you have a membership. Total elopement budget for two people, including meal, accommodation, and legal paperwork: £3,500–£5,000.
