This field is one of the few were you can go from idea to reality all by yourself. No dependencies.
if you're a roads engineer, the bridge you're to design and build? depends on politics, bureaucracy, actual materials to be delivered etc.
A gen scientist? depends on the lab to be founded and maintained.
But if you're a programmer, all you need is a laptop and an internet connection. That's it. No dependencies.
When I was a child I was fascinated by Science as a subject. I got excited when I read about Tesla and Edison and wanted to be someone like them who would build something and change the world. I studied science till highschool and then switched to computer science.
Computer science and programming helped me in fulfilling my unfulfilled dream of creating things. Tech helps me enjoy building products and the end result generated after building something is mental satisfaction and peace. Although I haven't built something which will effect the entire humanity 😂 but someday I hope to build something of that caliber.
Earlier I used to think, it's just the sheer joy of turning your imagination into reality, but now I have realized, knowing what you have built is making someone's life a little bit easier, a little bit happier, that's the most rewarding thing for me! <3
From my own experience:
Working from home.
I have been working remotely since before the pandemic hit. I have more time with my wife and kids, and am able to focus on my other hobbies.
Impacting thousands of people.
I often choose to work on things I believe have a positive impact, and some of the applications I've worked on have been used by tens of thousands of people. My work improves the lives of thousands of people, and it brings me joy to see I'm able to help build the better world I'd like to see.
Intellectually challenging and deeply rewarding.
It is hard to describe the thrill of solving a really hard problem in a clever way. "EUREKA!", shouted Archimedes, running naked on the streets, when he found out how to test if the crown's gold was dilluted, and Stephen Hawking famously said it feels like sex, but it lasts longer. In tech, I have an "EUREKA!" a week. I've been doing this for some 10 years and I assure you: it never goes away. Working with tech provides you with this constant dose of challenging problem-solving that makes you feel valuable to the world.

Creating something that works and that's useful (and finding solutions to problems, but that's just a part of it) ... and you can do it remotely, as another commenter remarked.
I love to hear that so many in tech gain so much joy in creating something out of nothing and making a difference in people’s lives…and all without being tied down to a specific location or set of resources. That’s definitely bonus!
Finding the actual end of Google. When Google responds with "Found 0 results for those search terms AND no suggestions," that is the true end of the Internet and the obvious beginning of something (probably) innovative.
I get that response from Google search about once every 2 months.
Then I hop over to GitHub and run the exact same search. 1,000 results. Thank you Google for not indexing GitHub.
About once a year though, I'll get nothing on Google, GitHub, or StackOverflow/StackExchange. Completely uncharted territory is my favorite jam.
