We've launched Grandma's Quilt, our 40th application. It's designed as a weekly video-call game board for a grandparent and a young child (ages 3-8) to interact over distance.
The app facilitates a shared activity board during a peer-to-peer video call. Features include a storybook where Grandma voices character lines with synced page turns, a drawing canvas for real-time collaborative coloring, and simple turn-based puzzles like memory match, with sticker rewards for the child.
Grandma's Quilt is built with COPPA compliance in mind. Children do not have accounts or provide personal information. A parent creates an account, provides verifiable consent, and shares a 'Quilt Code'. The grandparent creates an account, subscribes, and connects using this code after parent approval. The child's device uses a single 'Call Grandma' button.
Calls are encrypted peer-to-peer WebRTC. Signaling and shared board data use ephemeral Supabase Realtime broadcast, with no per-stroke data storage. AI (Gemini) generates age-appropriate stories, conversation prompts, and drawing guesses.
Basic features include one story per week, 10-minute calls, and basic drawing. A 'Quilt Club' subscription (billed to the grandparent) unlocks unlimited stories and call time, advanced games, exclusive story packs, and a saved-drawings gallery.
Visually, the app uses a 'Patchwork Quilt' design with soft pastels, stitched panels, wooden buttons, and embroidery line art. It is an installable PWA.
