This week, we're diving into Jazz. With its complex chords, polyrhythms, and heavy improvisation, it can be a challenging genre of music. Whether you're into the old old stuff: Big Band, Ragtime, Dixieland, etc. OR you're into the old stuff: Swing, Bebop, Gypsy Jazz OR maybe you prefer the blend of Jazz Funk, Jazz Blues, Jazz Rap, Jazz Fusion, etc. ... whatever angle of Jazz you're into, let us know here.
How we do
In this weekly series, folks can chime in and drop links to whatever it is they've been listening to recently + browse others suggestions.
If you'd like, you can view previous entries in the series here. And for those who have been following along with this series, you may notice that I'm now posting it under the DEV Team org... it's the same old series, but I've just decided to house it here going forward. 😀
We got the jazz, we got the jazz... Note: you can embed a link to your song using the following syntax {% embed https://... %}
. This should work for most common platforms!
Looking forward to listening to y'all's suggestions! 🎶

My boy Ardhito Pramono
Another Ardhito Pramono
Oooooo yeaaaah, Imam! Turning us onto some Indonesian Jazz... this is so dope! I'm absolutely digging Ardhito Pramono!
How do you think about that?
Oooo I like the new one you added if that's what you're asking about. This tune makes me feel really relaxed. I'm absolutely loving the music video... reminds me a bit of Wes Anderson.
That's true... comeback in our teenages
A group I learned about over the weekend is the Julian Lage Trio. They have some really cool performances... I love this one on Paste Magazine (which btw, Paste is a great source for live musical performances).
Kinda jazz/kinda funk/kinda pop... whatever it is, it's good music. Check out Madison Cunningham for some seriously awesome guitar playing & singing.
If ya like Hip Hop and Jazz, I recommend checking out Robert Glasper... he jumps back and forth between both genres, often blending the two in interesting ways. Here's a J Dilla tribute performance he did.
If ya end up riding the Glasper train, you're bound to run into saxophonist Kamasi Washington. He has an amazing album called Heaven and Earth that's worth a full listen, but I'm gonna pluck "Street Fighter Mas" from it because the music video is sooooo dope.
Speaking of Street Fighter, did you folks know that there's a pretty serious jazz community forming around video game music... if you're interested, check out this video:
Annnnnnd, I wanna bookend this by giving a shout to this awesome performance by Medeski, Martin, and Wood with DJ Logic. This one has been in my rotation for a long long time. It's awesomely weird and seriously cool:
I might return later on to drop a few classics on y'all!
דניאל זמיר - "אמן" - האלבום המלא | (2006) | Daniel Zamir - "Amen" - Full Album
Finally getting around to tuning into these suggestions. I'm only on the first one by Daniel Zamir right now, but wow, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! 🙌
Ooooo heck yeah! Lovin' the playlists, Christian. I'mma check these out later on today.
My dad wanted me to chime in with this big band version of Cole Porter's "Beguin the Beguine" ... Artie Shaw is the clarinetist/bandleader and that's Tony Pastor on the sax. Damn good stuff!
Haha I feel like we're always perfectly aligned on these genres 😂 literally just started compiling this a week or two ago
Haha, that's so awesome! We're def on the same wavelength. 🙌
I'm tuning into the first song on your playlist, "Deep In A Dream", and loving it. Never heard this one before!
Lookin' down the list I see some familiars and some unfamiliars. I'm gonna have a good time going through this playlist.
Ya
rockjazz, Chris!I listen often to Norah Jones
Norah Jones is so awesome. My parents are big jazz fans and I remember she came onto the scene near-abouts when I was in high school... lotsa Norah Jones playing in my house at that time.
I’ll have to come back to this and share all my favorites!! 🤎
Oooo please do, Brittany! I'm ready whenever you are. 🙌
