Not long ago, I saw a breakdown of the story behind Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and it's been on heavy rotation this Christmas season at my place — check it out here on Digging the Greats. Here's a pretty cool cartoon music video that they put together for it!
I also saw a deep dive look into Vince Guaraldi Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas album via Dead Wax here. This album is absolutely in my top 3 Christmas albums, and possibly takes the #1 spot. The whole thing is brilliant, but I think my fave has to be "Linus and Lucy" which you'll find timestamped here. But for the sake of embedding cleanly, here's the full album:
+1 for the Vince Guaraldi Trio!
I love sad songs and am not big on traditional Christmas music, so I've been partial to this track lately:
It's a cover of this 2000 song by The Handsome Family:
And it was also covered, beautifully, by Phoebe Bridgers and Andrew Bird:
OOooo I had never heard this one, but it's nice. I really like the Phoebe Bridgers version!
My favorite sad Christmas song is probably Blue Christmas. Here's a cool live version of it from Elvis's `68 Comeback Special:
Classic! "The Year Without a Santa Claus" is one of my favorite childhood Christmas movies, and this song always reminds me of the movie! Although they didn't use the Elvis version, hahah
😮 how did you do those awesome Spotify cards?
All our embeds essentially use the same syntax:
{% embed https://... %}
So, this Spotify card:
... is written like so:
{% embed https://open.spotify.com/track/7ve4Gzms1u0wW0EhMi6CXu?si=ab2c79ad436941da %}
Which is the same as how it works for embedding YouTube videos. For instance,
{% embed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aur9gLzsXQU %}
creates:A mashup of classics. There's an hour long version in the youtube comments.
Imperial March by John Williams
Carol of the Bells by Mykola Leontovych
Arranged & Orchestrated by Samuel Kim
YESS!!! I gotta say, Disney has successfully woven Star Wars into Christmas for me. They released a lotta the new movies and shows during the Christmas season + always drop so much amazing merch around the holidays. I'm loving the mashups!
Gotta love this oddball Christmas special with Bing Crosby and David Bowie:
And the hilariously awesome tribute version from Will Ferrel and John C. Reilly:
I got a few that I rotate through around the holidays:
Pentatonix. All of their various Christmas albums.
Jackie Evancho's various Christmas albums.
Lindsey Stirling's album Warmer in the Winter.
All great suggestions! 🙌
I really dig the Pentatonix's version of Carol of the Bells here:
I think my 2 favorite Pentatonix Christmas songs are Carol of the Bells, and Mary Did You Know:
Gotta give it up for Chuck Berry of course... He gave us one helluva gift in rock'n'roll!
I am a one piece fan so i am listening to one piece xmas song
why I am not thinking about this too
I just got back from a week in Berlin, and this Low song was EVERYWHERE:
This is nice! I like all the layering — kinda feels a bit like a Phil Spector produced Christmas song. Really appreciate ya sharing, I'd never heard this before! It's always cool uncovering new Christmas tunes. 🎄
Tyler the Creator's Grinch song, "The Grinch" - it's pretty dope
